It's funny this thread....Sorry guys but I've got to laugh. The "great smoking debate" thread that I contributed to a load of times on this site was ignored and pilloried by a lot of members. We've paid tax on cigarettes for years subsidising everyone else. The stats about the NHS were sub-standard and totally false about smokers using more NHS resources than the tax paid for. It was patently obvious that "stealth" taxes would be introduced over a period of time to compensate for the ban coming in next year. It was also obvious that the "do-gooders" would then pick on another form of pollution that affects them afterwards. In other words, car drivers. Why should I have to put up with your pollution if you can't put up with mine? I for one am glad. It has been proven that cars cause more cases of asthma than smoking. I won't go into the whole debate again as it has already been documented. But you have been well warned. I have already cut down on cigs by 50% because of the ban in Scotland. I foresee the same end result for car drivers. I thought we lived in a democracy?

Well done for cutting down on the ciggies! Hope it's making you feel better and wealthier.

No probs Mrmystery. I'm not going to re-open the smoking thread either. My final thoughts are these. Since 1986 the cost of a packet of cigarettes has increased by 700%. Slightly higher than the rate of inflation I think you'll agree. I'm not sure what the percentage is petrol wise is because I don't drive either...but I'm sure it isn't anything near that. Once the smoking ban starts in England, watch for other taxes rising rapidly. Council tax, 2p on Income Tax, National Insurance being raised....etc.

Mind you, the state Labour are in they might have to reverse the whole process if they want to come close to winning the next election....lol

Yeah i guess you've got a point. I don't think you have to be a driver to realise petrol prices are getting out of hand. But the fuel companies could do a lot more to absorb some of the costs as i said earlier. I just don't want the situation to get out of hand again. I remember the chaos caused by the last fuel protests, justfied as they might be to some people. The next time it could be a lot worse and something needs to be done before things get to that stage.

It will effect non drivers aswell. People who use Public Transport will get hit as the buses will still need the fuel to move around and they do pay less tax on their fuel, but if the Oil companies increase there prices then the percentage of tax increases aswell, and then the fares will rise and passengers will foot that bill.

Its already increased in London due to all kids under 16 getting free travel, its us the fare payers that have been hit with several large increases in fares over the last few years.

Put on to that the higher fuel costs which the bus companies will use as an excuse you can guarantee that fares will go up.

So it is in the best interest for every Car, Bus, Train(Diesel) and frequent flyers to make a stand against this stealth tax and greed by oil companies

How can one company make 3 billion profit and still increase there prices

Before we get to harsh on the fuel companies, and the profits that they make it should be noted that they make the mass majority of their profits from their oversees ventures rather than selling fuel in the UK. In addition, although they make large profits a lot of this is paid out to their shareholders in dividends which eventually makes its way into people's pensions.

Whilst they could use some of their profits to sell petrol at a loss to the UK consumers, it really isn't within their remit and nor should it be. Petrol is more expensive in the UK because the tax is higher, not because the petrol stations overcharge by making a few pence profit per litre.

Having said that, I really hope that we don't go down the mob rule route again. Don't like what the government does, then vote for someone else when the opportunity arises...

It's not all tax, some of it is the fuel companies jacking up the price as they know people will have to pay. If it does come down to protests they should be held partly accountable instead of simply blaming the govt. In relation to an above post it seems people are starting to vote for someone else if the local elections are anything to go by.

Prices cannot keep rising something has to give one way or the other. Sooner rather than later. Interesting to see so many different viewpoints.

Don't know where they got their figures because by my reckoning there's 8 litres in a gallon and if you are paying around £1 a litre that works out at around £8 a gallon, not £4.50 surely????

Spare a thought for me and the thousands of fellow employees at my company, plus the tens of thousands in a similar position.

We get a company car, which we pay tax for in our wages, and we get a fuel card in order to buy fuel of course.

Every time we fill up on our fuel cards, this is deducted from our following months salary. I average about 600 miles a week and my car, a 1.3 Astra Estate CDTI (08 plate) does approximately 500 miles to a full tank when it is empty of gear and has no roof rack on it. It costs approximately £60 to fill the tank, so I have roughly £240 deducted from my salary the following month.

In retrospect though, for each mile I use doing work, business miles as it's called, I get 11.3p back. That works out at £56.50 per £60 to fill my tank. So at present, I'm actually losing £14 per month IF my car is empty of kit and has no roof rack.

The thing is, depending on how much I travel, the distances, how many times I start up, the wind factor from my roofrack and ladders, plus the extra weight in the boot from all my gear and adding personal miles to the tally, I lose a fair bit more than that. But this 11.3p has been the same since fuel was 70p per diesel litre. Back then, I would be deducted about £140 per month, so I'd make maybe £100, which of course would be whittled down for my own personal miles usage.

So just over a year ago, we made money on our fuel. And this was more or less earnt by seeking out garages with the cheapest fuel and avoiding the expensive garages. So for me personally, I'm not just losing that £14 per month, I'm losing the initial £80+ that we earned in being careful with our purchases in the first place.

The 11.3p allowance is dictated by the government. So although they allow the fuel prices to go up, they have point blank refused to increase this 11.3p allowance and it has been this rate for a couple of years. That was until this week as I've heard it's going up to about 13p per mile.

Also to add to that post, Diesel where I fill up, a Total UK garage, is £128.9 per litre. A full 45p per litre than this time last year.
