fruity goodness wtf are you on about?
Erm ... I dunno ... I think it was something to do with Empire providing FME with ROMs & flyers and supporting the scene and then someone hacked their site through a "backdoor"

Remind me. How did you get to this conclusion?
Erm ... I dunno ... I think it was something to do with Empire providing FME with ROMs & flyers and supporting the scene and then someone hacked their site through a "backdoor"
or something and blagged a load of ROMs that were not on offer or something. Anyway, Empire were betrayed in some sort of way but no real harm
was done. Anyway, Empire went a bit "queer" :bigeyes18:after that and withdrew all their support and forbade FME from emulating any of their fruities. Which is too bad 'cos I quite liked the Big Cheese one that they did.
It is these things of which I spake.
I'm not sure if their site was 'hacked' as you put it. Many roms we have on other formats come from the machines themselves or from BBS boards that host updated revisions for current games. The Empire roms that were made into 'unathorised' layouts, against Empire's request could well have been aquired that way.
Empire had no real choice but to turn their backs on the scene after that happened. I doubt it was in a fit of rage but a common sense move. Something they maybe didn't want to do but had it forced on them. Their competitors would have had quite a lot to say about Empire if they simply shrugged their shoulders and carried on in the face of the blatent cheek.
The real harm done here was the fact that in some respects, FME had a legitimate existence in the eyes of 1 manufacturer. I believed Empire used the emulators to save on the development costs so their aquaintance with the scene was a 2 way deal. They got what they needed and we got legitimate roms and artwork with the owners consent. Wether people think Empire's games were good or not has no bearing on the significance of this mutual cooperation. Back then, it was hoped other manufacturers would maybe embrace the scene in the way Empire did. Imagine if Barcrest and the others saw what was going on, and offered a similar mutual deal with the scene. Imagine if Barcrest have in their vaults, art and roms for machines long gone that even us as a collective couldn't find. Or even releasing original version roms complete with true skills and the gameplay that players began to manipulate forcing the manufacturer to 'update' the roms with newer versions.
The EMPIRE cooperation had massive potential for the scene to be maybe accepted by the other manufacturers. Even to the point that the scene would be happy with legitimate resources fed to us when manufacturers saw fit. But nope. 1 person saw fit to infringe on Empire's wishes leaving them no alternative but to pull out, and no doubt ending our closest relationship we as a scene ever had with the manufacturers as a whole.
So.
(but no real harm
was done.) and (Anyway, Empire went a bit "queer" :bigeyes18:after that and withdrew all their support)
First point, it's quite the opposite. Second point, can you blame them?

If Empire are so concerned why don't they put a stop to the people on Ebay selling the disks, with Empire machines on them,as they are making money out of Empire.

That is a different subject altogether. eBay and the disk suppliers are as much out of reach to the manufacturers as they are to us. And if theres issue there, why don't the manufacturers, or Empire seeing as the subject at hand is about them, ban the selling of their machines also. After all, people are making money from that. Is there any difference between the two?

zoltar it is probably because empire can just say no to the fme scene in regards to their games being emulated. but on ebay the emulations have been sold and forgotten about because they never know when someone is going to sell them so its hard to stop.

Thanks for clarifying the situation regarding why Empire withdrew their support. I was trying to recall events from memory and got it a bit mixed up.
Now my curiousity is awoken and although I understand you're not gonna tell us the name of the offending bumberclart who got Empire's hackles up but could we be furnished, perhaps, with the name of the layout which caused this furore? And where it was released? Or is this matter now closed, done & dusted, swept under the carpet, fergeddaboutit?

Yeah, it's getting a bit like Cluedo now. I'd like to suggest to Zoltar that it was Bencrest, in the Library with The Big Cash Machine.
