In Topic: PlusNet?

Just seen this...

I'm with PlusNet and while i would agree that they are great when you don't have any problems, be warned, they suck when you do. I have been fortunate in that i have only ever had problems twice but both times i ended up telling them what their problem was. I have been with them for my entire time on ADSL btw - 2 years. Was on NTL cable before that and i have to say that was terrible in comparison!!! They even billed me for months after i left - or rather they tried, obviously i cancelled the payments as soon as i got wind of it :)

Their (PN's) solution was ALWAYS to switch the router off for an hour and switch it back on again. Kinda awkward when a) you know it won't help the problem and B) you're meant to be working on a vpn at the time (back then i WAS on a business package with them - i'm not now, i just switched to a residential package to take advantage of the 2mbit).

Also, the 30:1 contention is only on their portion of the network. You will still be provisioned on a 50:1 line at the exchange. What impact this will have will depend on the capacity at your particular exchange - there is an exchange checker at http://usertools.plus.net/exchanges/ (poss. members only but i don't think so).

Don't get me wrong - i think i would still recommend them, but you should be aware of these points. It's not all roses!!

Their user forums are here: http://portal.plus.n...orums/index.php

You should be able to login using the user and password both as "guest". Take a look for yourself. There is a LOT of unrest amoungst their customers right now.

Judge for yourself.

Martin.

Greetings! (Not that i actually know who anyone is on here :))

Anyways, it was probaby Lee Taylor AFAIK. We've been in touch (as in Baz has dropped him a mail), hopefully he'll get back to us!

If not, i'll have a crack myself...

Actually, i just re-read my post and it seemed a little over enthusiastic :o Sorry 'bout that. Just that i've just made a major step forward on a board (vid game) that i've spent the last 6 weeks or so working on!!! ALL the chip select circuitry had one up in smoke. What's the chances of that eh?

Anyways, laters.

Edit: Feels weird being a "junior member" somewhere again ;) Can't beleive it was really Oct 2003 i was working on the system 80 stuff...

Sorry for dragging up old threads!! Am searching for ANY useful info whatsoever, so i'm trying real hard (no pun intended)...

Adydb: you say there are projects in the pipeline... Are you able to put me in touch with anone working on these projects please? Pretty please with knobs on??? (no, seriously!!)

You see, a mate of mine owns a couple of these. By a couple i mean a Sidewinder and it's lesser spotted brother, Spellbound!! It's perfectly possible he's posted here himself, i haven't looked.

Anyways, i have the PCBs on my bench right now trying to breath some life into them. No video whatsoever. Known good 5101's, good Z80's, good clock signal, board held in reset. However, that's pretty much where the goodness ends. ALL the chip numbers are either scrubbed off or they are custom numbers which to anyone but someone that worked for ACE (and has a 20 year memory!!) are going to be as good as useless...

I'm assuming if people are working on the project then they could help me and vice versa! Aside from the fact that there's 8 roms and therefore, being Z80 based the roms area is going to be 0-3FFF, i know nothing about the memory map. That would be a help. I'm assuming there's going to be some more memory somewhere other than the 2 x 5101s?

Damn if someone has some documentation then that would be fantastic, but if i could just work out what chips some of these custom chip numbers represent then i'd be able to fix it i should think.

Many thanks for any help anyone can give...

Martin.
PS: Can't the program / video side of these at least be run in mame? I appreciate the I/O won't be able to drive any lamps, but the program would run wouldn't it?

In Topic: System 80 Emulation - where do i contribute?...

25 January 2004 - 11:51 PM

Okay, i have to confess that i have managed to do nothing!

A few posts exchanged hands between myself and the guy that writes the emulator, and i promised to send him a CD with the roms for the machines that i can get to on it. This would assist him to debug his emulator.

I got permission to send them from the mate who owns the machines, and then promptly forgot due to a three month project to convert my garage into a games room, and xmas, and, and... (the usual)

I'll do my best to ressurect my part of the deal now that is all finished.

I can't influence the other side of it though :)

Martin.
