JPM Proteus / Who Wants to be a Millionaire SWP

22 May 2009 - 11:33 PM

I just got hold of a cheap JPM Proteus because the monitor was broken so it needs some work. I may also need a touch screen as the person I bought it from intended to give me one but we forgot in a mad rush to get it in the car before it got rained on. I am hoping he will post me one.

Unfortunately I have also discovered that the motherboard is faulty as the External Cache has to be turned off for it to boot. I then checked the CPU and found the socket is cracked due to it obviously having overheated in the past, probably what broke the cache or perhaps its just a CPU fault after all? The socket however clearly looks scorched and brittle so I am reluctant to chance replacing the CPU as it seems more likely the board is at fault.

I was wondering if anyone here knows a good source for parts as eBay and Google are coming up blank.

Preferably I would like to get hold of an IO card so I can replace the motherboard with a P3 I have lying around. I was a little disappointed to find I got the JPM custom board instead of the P2 with IO card, which would have been an easy upgrade.

Bear in mind I got the whole unit for £20 (though it cost £15 in fuel to pick it up) so even if I have a lot of parts to replace I am hoping it will still work out cheaper than these usually go for. Even if not, its still better than having to pay it all up-front and I am considering attempting dual-booting the machine too so I can use it as a jukebox frontend too, something I will at least be able to do even if I can't get it working again as a quiz machine. But I am optimistic at this point.
