Well, he didnt show up....
And, well as it has 2 hi lo reel, i decided to swap them round, to see if the same reel had the same problem in a different place.
It happend in the same place as before, where the working reel was swapped to, which leads me to the conclusion that its the machine thats buggerd...
Does anyone know what the hell i should do....

Sorry to hear that Dave, I can't really think of anything that might help...
You did switch over the cables from the reels on the Reel controller, not just the reels themselves? [hate to sound patronising, but whenever I get something like this it's normally a bloody obvious simple solution, what with me being a bit dim sometimes

I guess this post will at least bump the thread up a bit, I hope you get it sorted

If its *not a cabling/connector problem*, then it could be that the darlington drivers have gone for that reel, bit tipsy, guessing here we are on about a mpu 5 machine? They have a chip uln2803 for each reel, which translates the mpu low voltage signals to the higher voltage/amperage required by the stepper motors. If one of the outputs on the chip for that reel blew (which can happen, been messing about with myself making my own reel board, blew one already..) then the motor would not get all its pulses, so would not turn a full revolution, and therefore would not trigger the opto when it was expected.
Probably worth trying a new (ie second hand, not expensive on ebay if yuo look for a while) reel board (unless you feel capable of desoldering the chip and putting a replacement in to try it out).
[edit]
If the machine has two reel boards (not sure how many reels that machine has, one board controls 5 reels), try swapping them over....
Cant recall offhand if the reel boards have a jumper setting to say which one is which, but worth a try to see if the problem moves to another place.
[EDIT]
been messing about with myself
SHOULD read been messing about msyself, sheesh Im well gone lol

Well, last night after switching over the reels it didnt work, but then i switched over the cables, so th up reel was for accross, and accross for up. It didnt work on the up reel, which lead me to the conclusion that it wasnt the reel, but the cables.
I took out all the 3 main reels so i could get access to the board were all the 5 reels are connected to, unplugged them all, cleared off dust etc. then put them all back in, and now its working again. It is likely to break again, but at the mo its ok (hey its lasted over 10 hours so far).
Cheers ken, if it keeps going ill get a new mpu 5 board.

I think it was Reel G, it is the last of the top reels, so isn't a great deal of use but may still come in handy one day

Right thats it, im gonna ring up and demand my money back
The motor has blown in reel D, so it dont spin, just shakes and vibrates and sometimes jerks slowly.
The machine is obviously old and past its time, without having everything inside replaced, and also tracking down a motor is likely to be hassle, so is fitting it and it will also cost probably.
Oh well..
Oh and also, please could somebody send me a pm on how to manually empty a hopper, that would be a great help

I've used Swallow Amusements many times and I can honestly say that the service I've received from them has been first class.
My orders have always arrived quickly and have always been spot on. They were even kind enough to let me off when I calculated the total amount wrong and paid them (by PayPal) about 50p less than I should have done.
And before anyone says it, No I don't work for them
