Right. I know what the problem is. You need to delete the CHR as well for the £10 rom to work, chaps.
Go into: Design/Edit Mode/Character File Editor; then once you're in the Character Editor, click on 'Clear', then go out of Edit Mode and reset the machine. It should work for you then. You'll need to save the layout if you want to continue to use the £10 rom afterwards.
