I visited Southport Pleasureland .... to be honest its was the same as last year as they said there was improvements ....

I went to visit the arcades and there was NOTHING .. thats right Not a fruit machine or penny drop in site

i asked the staff what was going on

Staff told me that the owner of the arcade recently died  and they have to shut down the arcade area

i thought wtf

I never in all my life have seen a Seaside Fairground without  Amusements

seems to me that southport Pleasureland is a joke ... theres more space for another 50  rides and places for more fun ...

i wont be visiting southport in the future ... going somewhere else :bigeyes06:

Very sad, and being replicated throughout the country too.

I haven't seen you mention it on Facebook lad  ;)

I guess that is the way of how this sad world of gambling is going now. Everything is online, even the slots you play at most of the arcades on the newer versions all run through terminals, controlled by online manufacturers - just like the online casino software on the majority of the gaming sites.

It is such a criminal shame in a way, because we are losing our unique, traditional 'Britishness' with the amusement arcades closing. If the older arcades aren't adapting to the newer software and hardware that the gaming industry uses nowadays, then they have no chance of survival, because the younger generations have no concern or regard for machines of yesteryear, and even those but a few years old too - they are going to be classed as outdated soon, you mark my words!

How many folk with gambling addictions started by playing the machines in the seaside penny arcades. An exciting and happy time for a kid, on holiday with mum and dad or just on a day trip, and being seduced by the sounds and the flashing lights. Really good times, and perhaps thats why some of us throw our cash away in the puggies, is it just a sad attempt to win back the good feelings of of our childhood?

In my opinion, the more arcades that close the better, if it helps save the next generation getting the machine bug before they have even left school.

Have to say I totally disagree with jim 2311's comments.

The arcades and the sea sides were the bread and butter of the whole fun experience and to say that the more that close the better to me personally is an insult.

The reason all these arcades, tourism and economy are struggling is because of what the government has done to them and all this online crap has killed the once great industry and caused more gambling problems than ever before.

Gambling is supposed to be a non-profitable, FUN experience and not to be used as financial gain and I'm sure there are a lot of people out there who miss the seaside experience ( I know I do) and it is a real shame that more and more are closing every day.

The experience has gone, the machines are crap, people are losing their businesses and generally things are going from bad to worse.

How can that be a good thing?
