Hi all,

I've bought a faulty fruit machine with the intention of trying to get it fixed up and working, it is one I've not seen before - Big Breakfast, but it is a low tech machine in a casino style cabinet.

I have attached a picture of the machine and the MPU inside.

Although the machine is in good condition, it does not work. When plugged in and switched on the LED's on the Scorpion MPU board light or blink, but nothing else happens. There are no other lights, nothing on the display, no sound, and the reels do not initialize.

To start with i thought it might be a fuse, so I checked the 4 fuses on the power supply and they are all ok. However, I noticed that one of the LED's on the power supply is not lit - 24v - see pic.

Could anyone tell me if this LED not being lit could be causing the machine not to start, or is there something else I should be checking?

As I said, everything else looks ok - nothing looks burned, damaged or missing. I only really bought the machine to tinker with and try and get it working, but now I have it I would love for it to work again :).

All advice very much appreciated,

Best regards,

Mark

Thanks Todd, yes it does look a lovely machine! To be honest I've never seen one in the wild before, although I do remember the "normal" Big Breakfast fruit machine and I remember playing it a lot back in the day! I've never seen or played this one though, which was part of the reason I bought it!

I'm hoping it might be something fairly straight forward wrong with it too so I will be able to get it working again :).

Cheers,

Mark

Not seen this version before, but I am guessing that hardware wise, it uses one of the BFM scorp boards (v2 possibly?).

Get yourself over to MPU Mecca, and I am sure one of the lads can help with this :)

This was a great little lo-tech back in the day. I hope you get it working. Hopefully it's just a case of the PSU being down and you can pick up a spare or get it fixed, because as you say, the rest of the machine looks in good nick. Nice Addams Family pintable there as well - worth a few bob those are!

Yep, just hope it is a PSU, as scorp bords of that age are a bastard to fix.

Thanks guys,

Hi Stanmarsh, I hope it is the PSU too as I was guessing that would be easier to fix/replace than the MPU.

I don't suppose you know whether it is likely to be a PSU fault as the 24v LED does not light (see original pic), or could this be a coincidence? Actually when I removed the PSU to take the pic I did hear something loose moving around inside the PSU so I guess that would also suggest there is something wrong with it.

However, I've had a few machines over the years and never had a fauly like this where NOTHING lights up at all - usually there is an error message of some sort, but with this machine, nothing apart from the blinking lights on the MPU.

So, I guess I need to know if there is anything on the PSU I can check to see if it is ok - what voltages I should expect etc. And if the PSU is faulty, does anyone know if I could get it repaired or buy another to replace it?

Thanks again,

Mark

Apart from BFM scorp4 hardware, I know little else about any of the scorp hardware, and I am pretty sure yours will be scorp2.

Think your best bet, is to seek help over at MPU Mecca, as they are generally best placed to help on older hardware like this.

Thanks again,

I've posted over at the Mecca and already had a few replies pointing me in the right direction :).

I will report back here and let you know how I get on!

Cheers,

Mark

Yep, the Mecca lads will know, and especially Player.

Seams it's a bastardised version of scorp 4 which did not last long, as it was not very reliable.

Certainly caught me out for sure, as I though it was scorp2 based, especially noting it's age.
