Rob,

I’m getting confused reading you’re posts (Join the club!? I hear you cry)
From your original post which states that when you log onto an account it freezes, the problems have escalated.

Right, not good at multi quotes so here goes......

First of when the computer is turned on a screen comes up for 3 seconds asking " Choose an oporating system to start , or pres Tab to select a tool"

1) Earlier version of windows
2) Windows setup
3) Microsoft windows XP Pro setup

The first option is the only one that works, so then.........

It comes up with another list \/

The next screen says "Please select the oporating system to start:"

Windows XP Pro
Windows XP Pro
Windows XP Pro
Windows XP Pro
Windows XP Pro Setup < "this is the one I tried to install but it failed"

The computer looks like it has 4 copies of XP on it.

The first on the list is the one that freezes after you log into a user account. The 2nd and 3rd don't load at all and the 4th loads but has no sound and says "You may be a victim of software counterfeiting" This copy of windows did not pass genuine windows validation.

The first rule of troubleshooting – every time you make a failed attempt to solve the problem, undo any changes you made and make sure only the original fault condition persists and no other before the next attempt.

So, can you return the PC to the condition it was when you first got it?
Did you ask your sister for any history on the PC. Was it acting up before it finally failed? Did it happen after a download or playing a pirated disc? Has someone else tried to repair it? Etc etc…The more information the better.

No it has no recovery cd/dvd. She deleted the recovery partion on the HDD by mistake.
She said that before it went funny the sound stopped working.

If you have another PC and you still suspect your sisters HDD, hook it up as a slave and see if you are able to access the accounts. You can also run Check Disc, delete all unnecessary operating systems (you say you have 4) or transfer any files your sister wants to keep into a file on the master HDD then reformat the whole HDD. If you do reformat the HDD only do the OS install back in its original PC.

I have a brand new HDD which I put into the computer it's a 250 GB SATA HDD. I tried to install XP pro first and that failed and then I tried to install vista pro 32 bit and that also gave the stop error BSOD.

All the suggestions posted by members have their merits, but no one wants to post the same advice as the persons previous, and so give offers of an alternate fix, and you end up with too many routes to go down. It’s best to do as you say and have a one-to-one with someone who has some hands on experience.

Yeah I see what you mean so many people helping and I'm all over the place trying to fix it. Cheers for the advice :)

OK still working on this, I've been sent a copy of XP media centre and have been told to burn it to CD but when I try it in alcohol 120 it says it's not a valid img! the file extension is .gbi and there is 2 CD's to burn. Any ideas? Cheers

Edit

I've tried gBurner but still says "the file format is invalid or unsupported"

Can gBurner convert the file, rather than burn it directly or do you get the same sort of error?
If not, try MagicISO:

http://www.magiciso.com/download.htm

as that can convert as well...

I've tried that but it didn't work magic ISO is the same and so is imgburn, nero and the rest of them. Looks like the file could be corrupt as it was sent over msn.

Give up now feck it she can have it back!!

Never heard of a .gbi file Rob..a bootable CD/DVD would usually always come as an image file .img or bootable iso.

Not even the program i use poweriso has that file extension and that has some weird ones.

There are plenty of ''cough'' versions of XP Home/Pro etc on a certain site that we use..a mate of mine got one from there and it works absolutley perfect.
Mmmmmm...Sandy ive 'ad her ye know. :)

I have the cd's you sent me from before and it wont work. Im thinking it could be the CD/DVD drive is fooked. I tried to install the windows xp pro from the cd and it did the same thing and would not install. Could be the cd so going to try another one in a few weeks when I get hold of it.

I pop the DVD in todd and it says boot from CD press any key I do that and it starts to copy files to the HDD when its done that it gives the bsod. Ive just managed to log in via the 4th install of xp. It looks like there is 4 copies on the pc as it asks which windows xp pro do i want to load and there is 4 all the same. 1 loads but then crashes 2 just says bad boot or something 3 is the same and 4 loads but with other usernames that are not on the 1st one on the list. If that makes any sense todd. Im logged in now but it says this copy of xp in not genuine copy of windows and has limited features.

I'm going to try and install vista now im logged in and its working. What I dont understand is how come there is 4 lots of xp on here and how come the 1st copy of xp loads but then freezes but the 4th copy is working but is not genuine!!!

Pulling my hair out here.

I can send you the links to Windows XP Pro Corp 32bit edition. You'll have to slipstream a service pack using nLite. Also you can customize & strip services etc from the install files then burn as an ISO to disc.. I then use an xp key found from a specific vid on utube. I've had no problems so far. Tried & tested both on my PC & my dads pre-loaded Vista laptop.

Or if you like I can send you it with Service pack 3 already slip streamed ( With a few minor adjustments stripped). Then what you should do after it's all been reconfigured & customized is download Acronis 2011 & use it to backup your harddrives. It's a bit off a nightmare to grasp all at once but deff worth the investment. I've done countless factory resets on mine at least 250-300 times loosing all my minor software configured settings etc & folder & file layouts etc.. use to take weeks to restore completely now I can basically save as I go. The only problem is I'll have to create differential back ups which I'm not keen on as Operating Systems naturally begin to break down after time so I don't like to keep backing up upon backing up etc as I'll stuff my self in a dead end.

I think once everything's loaded & restored to perfection load it up into a virtual machine where you can adjust changes every now & then without having to run the operating system contentiously then either clone from with-in an acronis tib or just convert it to one. Idk I'm still a newb as I've just recently learnt but a more time efficient way or perhaps if it's non system related files & just personal files you can take a 1day old restored system & restore those partitions from your 1year old system leaving the operating system & registry in tact. :S

I use CDBurnerXP to burn .ISO files - be sure to set it to the slowest speed to avoid corrupt files. It happens often enough

I forgot to mention and this took me weeks to figure out, If you like having the operating system separate to your Documents & Settings which was how mine was originally you'll need to state that in nlite.. then before installing the operating system use burn a copy of True Image to disc then boot from that to format both C:/ & D:/ drive then resume with the xp install.

I have an 80GB Seagate drive which hosts

(C:) system Files & (D:) Documents And Settings

Then I have a 1TB Western Digital for (E:) Personal Files.. Then a 2TB Western Digital as (F:) Back Up. It holds a clone of my operating system plus a duplicate copy but this one's installed in a virtual machine. I wouldn't bother re-installing Vista.. Windows 8 will be out soon if that's your kinda operating system but I prefer XP.
