I have had a Lexmark 300 series printer, few months ago It stopped working

I have

deleted the Drivers, reinstalled the drivers and got a new USB cable and still nothing

any ideas

I dont print much, so dont wanna spend lots on something that wont be used

I had a Lex once, the heads dried out within week of no use (though thats a common problem with any make).

How often is 'not much'? .... if its very seldom then why buy One, if you need a printed Doc pop it on a stick and print for a couple of pence at an internet cafe..

If its only used for text the Second option is just to buy a second-hand One from your local paper, as cheap as a fiver mabey...less that the price of a refill!..then they match on quality i'd say.

Pick which ever one is easiest and cheapest to refill. I have seen printers (Lexmark) that are cheaper to buy than refill.

its a brand new cartraige i put in, I print off cd covers for use in the car, and maybe some forum notes,

May sound daft this, but most print carts I know of that especially have a built-in print head on the carts (HP especially, along with Lexmark), have a protective cap over the head (Normally a thin plastic strip).

Have you checked it's not this?

it seems to be working fine now, mind you who actually buys the proper print cartrages any way! Supermarkets own brands are just as good

Yes, I know on some print carts (Epson especially), they recommend you let the printer sit for a while with new carts, but with the ones with in-built heads, I can not see any rational need to do this.
