Hi everyone

I recently purchased an Impulse fruit machine called 'Hurricane' off ebay, but within 1 day of playing it the machine just turned itself off whilst in invincibility mode and now the machine will not even turn on again.

I've noticed that there were about 3 green lights on the PSU and 2 green lights on the main processor board (but one of these were faint) and no other lights were on on any of the other boards.

I left the machine on for an hour thinking it may be a dry joint, but since then, only one green light is showing on the PSU and absolutely no other lights are lit on any of the processor boards, and there was a slight 'burn' smell.

My initial thoughts were that the PSU is knackered. Especially as it's making a loud humming noise (think it did that when first got it home).

Has anybody else got any ideas of what's caused the machine to just 'switch off' and never come back on again, or what items I would need to bring the machine back to life again?

the one led light that is showing on the PSU is +36V.

Please can I ask anyone with an Impulse fruit machine to take a look at their PSU and state which of the voltage LEDs are lit please?

cheers

You almost certainly have a failed PSU there.

Just fixed an Epoch machine for someone local..... you would not think a tiny battery would wipe out the mainboard with leakage.

Far as I remember, there are 2 fuses on the PSU, so check those first.

Other than that, I'm with harry on this..... think the PSU is up the swanny, and will need either replacement, or poss the controller board replacing, as they often fail, sometimes catching fire in the process if they are the MK1 board.

eggy-777 on e-bay is probs your best contact for Epoch spares, if no one can help here.

that's brilliant folks!

thanks a lot for your responses - I've taken a look at the fuses although can only see one on there and it seems fine

I'll look at purchasing a replacement PSU from eggy-77

I'm hoping that I have not blown the processor.

If you just need a PSU, then best to contact eggy via that auction, and see what he can do, but for the cost of that spares pack, worth spending the extra few quid over what a PSU would cost, and just get that spares pack he's advertised.

Some of the lads on the mecca have dealt with him before, and not got a bad word to say about the guy, so seams a reliable enough source for parts.

£40 delivered total, dam right..... Lads on the mecca have used this guy before, and have said he's reliable.

Sodding cheap that.

Basically anything main part wise within respect to power / controller boards, is in that pack.

hi everybody !!

Just want to give you all an update - I've taken your suggestions about purchasing the Epoch spares from ebay (eggy-777 - very helpful and nice people) and pleased to say that my machine is back up and running (the psu was the only thing that needed changing, but got the boards anyway for future use).

so, thanks to all who contributed to the thread !!!!!

Just another quick question - I own a Barcrest machine and the 'coin entry decal thing' has a bulb behind it (and goes out when you reach the maximum amount of credit you can put in) - but noticed there isn't one on my machine (impulse) - does anyone know if impulse machines have a bulb or how to wire one up?

Just had this on my simpsons machine.

1) Check behind the slot and see if there are any wires going to bulb holders, the bulbs might just need replacing.
2) Assuming youve already done that, in my machine the wires were just hanging down loose. two black bulb holders and a white bulb holder, the black ones have an extra guide bit of plastic which slot over pieces of plstic behind the coin mech entry bezel.

Edit: Unless its on tokens only 1 of the black holder'd bulbs will light up, the white one goes in the middle to light up the "push to reject"

hi guitar et al

apologies for not getting back sooner but could not locate where the bulbs would go for the coin input bezel - now i've found the wires were dangling in to the bottom of the machine and everything is okay now - managed to fit the bulb in to the black bulb holder next to the coin input slot.

everything's perfect now with my fruitie!!!

thanks all

hi all (again!)

I thought I would resurrect this post.

Although there is no fault with the machine as such, I just wanted to ask if anyone knew how to disconnect the loudspeaker inside the top of the machine, as now and then the alarm would go off when switching the machine on (i.e., memory reset if not been switched on for a few days, or the machine has been switched on 3 times). It is really loud and annoying when the alarm goes off.

I just didn't want to simply 'cut the wires' to the speaker in case it does something to the fruit machine (i.e., the voltage needed to power the speaker goes elsewhere in the machine possibly blowing a board).

Any suggestions would be welcome please.

Jay

You could try tracing the speaker wires back to the cpu and unplugging it direct from the board or sound card.

The speaker should have spade terminals on the speaker itself, simply pull one of the plugs off.

Having said that, if you are getting reset errors that means the battery isnt holding charge, which means a leak is likely to come next, and we all know what happens when leaky batteries attack mpu's.

Get the battery off the mainboard, make sure it hasnt leaked already, replace with a fresh one, and problem solved.
