I been using Bittorrent for months, I love it, and like many here have said, believe it is THE future of P2P...
I have never had one of these letters, but my friend has, as monop guy here did, one thing I notice in common with all these getting letters is they are DL'ing NEW movies, so if movies is your thing (it isnt for me, apps/games/music is my lot) then do as suggested here, use peerguardian, from what I read it does work..
And I also agree these companies are infringing privacy rights by finding your IP while you are connected to these things and tracing your IP address back to you and your ISP, your IP address exsists so your computer can communicate with others, not so companies can trace you at will and send threating letters }
Just my opinions though
cant resist pasting this from the descript of what peerguardian does, lol
gotta love that

PeerGuardian is a powerful yet petite firewall application especially designed for P2P users and anyone else who wants to protect his or her computer from unauthorized searches instigated by private agencies and corporations.
PeerGuardian works by blocking and logging all TCP/IP connections to and from known IP ranges used by known P2P foes, such as the RIAA, MPAA, MediaForce, MediaDefender, BaySTP, Ranger, OverPeer, NetPD, and more.
To make sure that the block-list used to block malicious connections is up to date; PeerGuardian uses an on-line block-list Database that is continuously updated on a daily basis -- so your privacy will remain safe while swapping files.
PeerGuardian is compatible with all TCP/IP based file sharing applications, such as Kazaa, iMesh, LimeWire, eMule, Grokster, DC++, Shareaza, and more. In short, PeerGuardian is the must have tool for any file swapper.
PeerGuardian is not advertising supported, nor does it require registration, and no information is collected from or about product users.
gotta love that

I personally didn't download any movies using Bit Torrent, I normally use WinMX for that, I mostly got Games/Apps/TV Programs (Simpsons)
The PeerGuardian thing seems to be working anyway.

The thing is it's ok to download but not upload... If you use Kazzaa or winmx and don't share anything out or only share legal stuff you are 100% in the clear. The had an interview with some spokesman from the record industry and he even said as much. They are after the people sharing the files not the people downloading them. YET!! Anyway...
Also at the moment it's the US that are going nuts over but it soon going to happen over here. I just get all my best stuf on DVD's that contain crap loads of stuff and only cost £5 each. Saves me even bothering to download nowdays. 8-)

I also agree that if you like something then just buy it (as long as the price is justified) I payed £34.99 for the first season of The Simpsons, I think that was a bit too much, I may have downloaded it if I had knowen how, but sometimes its nice just to own the originals in the original packaging

I think that the best way is to get one of these £50 DVD+-RW drives kicking around on the net retailers at the mo, but good DVDs, burn backups, and then sell the originals.
At least then they won't know that you are doing it, you have purchased the original and so the producers get some money, and you get a good set of DVDs.
Heres hoping that every time I play a DVD-RW in my player it doesn't send any usage statistics to any of the industry people!

Buy em??? LOL Rent em more like from netflix or blockbuster... Then use clone DVD and you even get the menus. Far better than downloading...
The DVD's i was on about contain MP3's and software for £5... For films you may as well rent em and clone em yourself.
