Right got me a hold of 2 processors for my laptop

ones a 1.66ghz Intel Duo core
tne others a 1.4ghz Intel Mobile

i installed the duo core & when i went to turn my laptop on

the power light came on, the HDD light flashed twice, 4 secods later laptop powered off

now when i went to install the 1.4ghz the power light came on, HDD light flashed, then all lights flashed (like usual start up sequence) then the wifi light came on aswell

then the cpu fan started spinning and then it just stayed spinning, nothing happened even after 5 mins

any idea what could be up?

and i have googled it but cant find anything >.<

and both processors should be compatiable as ive looked them up on intels site & they are all the same wattage, and same pin type

Simple answer, system BIOS.

Unlike what you would get in a tower where you could use several versions of a chip line, on laptops I believe the bios firmware is normaly tied down to just 1 or two chip versions at best.

Have you definitely put the heatsink back onto the CPU correctly, with relevant thermal paste, and secured correctly (not too tightly, once crushed a CPU core with a 500gram copper heatsink by overtightening it :D)

Have you reconnected the fan and any relevant temperature sensors (if applicable) correctly?

The reason I suspect this is because you say the fan comes on and then goes to full whack, it might be that the processor isn't being kept at the correct temperature and the fan is trying to compensate.

if your system appears to be in a bootable state but nothing happends, it could be because windows has identified its not the original configuration.

a bit like HD cloning, it realises its in a different pc case and refuses to boot.

There is a good chance the CPUs are knackered.

Where did you get them from?

I reckond they would

Got em off a mate who runs a pc shop, he aint been able to test them so i said i'd have them off him

was free so i cant really moan

shame really as a duo core would give my laptop that extra boost lol

I've learned a valuable lesson in my years on eBay e.t.c.

NO-ONE honestly sells 'untested' goods as meaning 'untested'. No-one would throw away money knowing that they could test something and charge top whack. 99% of the time, 'untested' means 'I know they don't work, but you've no comeback when they don't work'.

Fact is, the CPUs will be knackered, and he'll almost certainly know that - but at least you didn't pay for them so haven't lost out!

I was going to buy one off ebay then i saw no returns & knew it was fishy, so thats why i asked my mate :p

i want a better processor but dont wanna fork out £50 for one either =/

Give it a good boot in the laptop nads.

That only works with Pc's in my experience

& i have a lot of it :p

The 2 in question i got off a mate
but the one that was working is the one that was originally in my laptop anyways, just want a faster processor in >.<

Really? You're doing it wrong. Changing a CPU can not cause you to lose data. Not if it was successfull anyway. Its theoretically possible that a damaged CPU could cause a mobo fault which then caused an HDD fault. However under normal circumstances you should never lose data because of a CPU change. The only thing that may happen is it will auto update the cpu driver if neccessary. (yes there is a dual core optimizer for AMD systems which doesn't come with windows ;). So if you have an AMD dual core and you dont have the Dual Core optimizer, get it.)

So the only data you would lose would be a driver, and even that is unlikely.
