#251716 That is soooo obvious

Posted by duplu on 22 May 2013 - 04:12 PM in Any Topic Chat

I'm probably opening myself up to ridicule here but I've been meaning to do this for a while.

I thought it might be fun (and we might learn some stuff too) to post things that you've only learned recently that were in hindsight a bit obvious.  I'll start off with two:

I only discovered recently that when you pull up a shutter blind you have to pull the cord in a specific direction.  Pull to the right and down to keep them up and pull to the left and down to release them.  I had to just go and check that though on my own blinds ;)

I also only noticed recently that you can sometimes see the moon during the day and sometimes not at all at night (because it's on the other side of the world in their day).  In hindsight very obvious because of it's orbit around the earth but I'd never bothered to notice!

Nice win too.  I've never managed to get the Jackpot Party award and I've been on the site for ages.

#250141 Fruit-Emu Outages

Posted by duplu on 14 April 2013 - 06:06 AM in I Found a Problem

I've got 3 kids, one of which is 6 months old, so there's definitely none of the 3rd 'S' for me!

The site hasn't had any problems recently:

http://stats.pingdom...fno2ntge/710422

We did have to change our DNS servers at the end of March, which did result in some outages, so it is possible the problems are still related to that issue.

Now back to sunning myself! Off to surfer's paradise today for a 3 day holiday within my holiday.

#248654 Payday loans companies finally getting regulated?

Posted by duplu on 06 March 2013 - 09:26 PM in Any Topic Chat

I forgot about the cash convert type shops.  I downloaded the Music Magpie app the other day and thought I go around the house and scan a few DVDs and Games.  They offer you an absolute pittance for most of the items I scanned.  For FIFA 2012 for the PS3 they offered 50p, a box set originally £90 was offered at £3.  A variety of DVD was between 25p and 30p.

Whilst we're on the subject of things getting out of control.  Has anyone noticed the abundance of casino games now spreading through the Apple App Store for its mobile devices.  You can't gamble on most of them but they give you a number of virtual chips to play with and then you can buy more via an in app purchase.  Some of them are selling bundles of chips costing over £60!  It's just madness.

Thank god they're going to reduce the adverts.  Every other day a new company springs up with another stupid name trying to entice people into more debt.

Today it was 'Cash Lady' fronted by none other than Kerry Katona who is an inspiration to us all in how to manage our finances!

Edit - Just took a look at their website 2670% APR, that's better than Wonga's 4214%!

Not until they set a limit on the amount of interest that can be charged, which is not part of the proposed regulations.

#248570 E-bay - Is It Such A Great Shopping Universe

Posted by duplu on 04 March 2013 - 03:56 PM in Any Topic Chat

Yeah sold an old iphone once and it cost me more than £50.  These days for high value items I try to arrange with the buyer to pay outside of eBay/Paypal and then cancel the transaction so neither of us gets negative feedback.  eBay tell you not to do this as your purchase won't be covered etc... blah blah but then their system for covering the buyer/seller are crap anyway so it makes little difference.

#248395 StarGames - rip off!

Posted by duplu on 27 February 2013 - 06:02 PM in Any Topic Chat

I find it hard to believe that not having proof for money on your person is enough for them to take it off you. I think there would need to be evidence of a crime in the local area say a break in and the police are on the look out. If they stop you in the streat and you have done nothing wrong they need reasonable doubt to ask you to carry out a search. If you are walking down the road at night after a large win in the casino and you are stopped by police how can you prove that you got the money from there? Only way would be by obtaining the CCTV. There is no legal limit to how much money you can have on you out in a public place.

Exactly correct.  I've never been asked to provide my name or address even when dropping a ton of money in ladbrokes.

I won £500 and it wasn't really that difficult to get the money.  Your IBAN number should be quoted on the top of your bank statement.  Just took a photo of my driving licence with my phone and e-mailed it to them.  Yes more difficult than transferring back to your card but they're not a UK outfit so they can't provide that option.

#247683 Capitalising Subject Threads

Posted by duplu on 11 February 2013 - 08:03 PM in Site Suggestions

It's a setting within Invision to stop users posting their topics totally in capitals, ie, SHOUTING.  It has the side effect of doing exactly what you have described.

I'll turn the setting off and we'll see if it's more annoying to have it switched off than on.

Duplu, is it possible for you to grant edit privileges to trusted members to add layout shots to existing download threads. This will help especially when there are multiple versions of a layout and people aren't sure which one the thread refers to.

bj

I've checked and I can authorise members to be able to edit downloads including adding images.  Is this something you're interested in doing as it's a huge job?  Some of the current downloads have images but they've been uploaded as thumbnails so clicking on them is pointless.

#247611 How To Contribute To Fruit-Emu

Posted by duplu on 10 February 2013 - 08:37 AM in Site News

This subject is a great idea duplu and good to see its on the site news. Hopefully it will inject some new life into here, it asks for donations/contributions in various ways like flyers, photos which we all know we desperately need. A few other ideas we could have if there,s space on this site. First as brownbag's mentioned the snapshot sites gone down so I think it would be a good idea to have a section on here like that for every/almost all layouts produces so its easy to see what's done or could be. re-dx'ed I know there,s piccies on the layouts to download but this could be in either alphabetical order or by machine company name I.e jpm, barcrest, bellfruit like the gallery section already is.
Secondly you could have a section for complete sets of workiing roms as a upcoming layout dx'er I,ve looked on cliffs repro and downloaded certain roms but can't get em to run as there's either to many or not enough bits to run em. What do you think guys.

I don't remember the snapshots site so I don't know what you need it to do.  Does whoever run the snapshots site still have the files so I can simply set it back up on the FE server?

#247610 Help, Cannot Escape The Forums

I've remove the 'More' option, which is supposed to aggregate menu items that can't be displayed.  It doesn't appear to be working properly.

This is a bug that I'll take a look at.

The home menu should always stay in the same place regardless of the screen width available.

They probably didn't know we had additional space as we never advertised it before.

#247546 How To Contribute To Fruit-Emu

Posted by duplu on 08 February 2013 - 09:36 PM in Site News

We often get asked by members how they can contribute to the site both financially and also by non-financial contributions. I thought it would therefore be beneficial to put together a list of various way members can contribute to Fruit-Emu:

Become a site supporter

Why not become a site supporter and increase the number of files you can download per day.  Your account will be upgraded the instant your Paypal payment is received.  Your download allowances will be increased and you will also receive one of these shiny badges below on your account so everyone knows that you are a site supporter.  All donations last for a year at which point you can renew or revert back to a standard member.

bronze.gif

£5 makes you a bronze supporter and allows you to download 256Mb/60 files per day

silver.gif

£10 makes you a silver supporter and allows you to download 512Mb/120 files per day

gold.gif

£20 makes you a gold supporter and gives you totally unlimited downloads.

Advertise on Fruit-Emu

Yes we all hate adverts but let's face it they pay for the majority of the running of the site so they're here to stay.  We do however try to make them not too much in your face and we don't use pop-ups or pop-unders.

If you have your own website or you want to use your own affiliate links for another website then you can advertise on Fruit-Emu.  We currently support banner adverts and these are shown on rotation with other currently advertised sites.  Fruit-Emu gets between 10,000 and 20,000 pages views per day so you can be sure your advert will be seen.  If you want more information and to sign-up click here.  Discounts are available for gold supporters and there are various spots on the site where you can choose for your advert to be displayed.

Write a tutorial for the knowledgebase

FME isn't the easiest of things to successfully get up and running and a lot of new people rely on the knowledgebase as their first stop for getting an emulation up and running. Writing meaningful tutorials however is a very time consuming process and probably isn't best done by people who have been using emulations for a long time as we're likely to miss out the things we think are obvious. If you want to write a tutorial then let us know and we'll publish your tutorial in the knowledgebase for all to see.

Upload flyers to the gallery

We have hundreds of high resolution scan of fruit machines flyers in the gallery. However we're always on the lookout for more flyers and we encourage users to scan and upload their own flyers if they're not already in the gallery. You don't need any special permissions and all we ask is that you upload your flyers to the correct category based on the manufacturer of the machine.

Use your Photoshop skills to help others

Whether it's cleaning lines off flyers, looking for the best way to lamp a layout, or even creating some nice looking sideart, Photoshop is an invaluable tool for budding creators. No one is going to be perfect early on, so why not assist in creating a layout and sharing your knowledge with a budding designer. Alternatively you can show everyone different techniques and effects that you use, which can be implemented on later DX layouts.

Upload photos of your own machine

The preferred images for producing a DX layout are either a flyer or glass scans. There are times however where there is no flyer available and in these cases we rely on photos of the machine in question. If you have a machine at home for which you know there is no DX layout available then please takes some high resolution photos and upload them to your own gallery on Fruit-Emu. Do try and remember to keep good light levels, with the machine switched off, as this makes it easier for people to work on the lamps.

Become a Layout Creator

Want to give something back? Then why not become a layout creator yourself? This isn't for the faint hearted and can take up a large amount of your free time. There is a fair bit to learn, but if you persevere and keep motivated, the results will be worth it.

Host your website with us
