I have just got my Refill key today and expected to be able to see the 'balance' in the machine.. But when I turn it, it just shows "Refill"
When I lift the lid, or open the cash drawer, it works fine and shows the balance, but I was under the impression that I could do this with the lid down.
I have the Red Gaming MPU5 Service Manual and that shows switch 1-3 as a way of enabling/disabling this, but on the Barcrest MPU5 (or atleast mine) this switch does something different.
Should I be able to check the balance with the lid down? If this isn't possible, then why does everyone keep on about using Refill keys in pubs/arcades?

manuals at the time of print would only work with the software that was writen so s/w ver HHS 0.1s i.e hot stuff 0.1 works fine s/w ver HHS 0.2s ect ect will not tally up but using a red gaminng manual red gaming programme the mpu5 diffrent from barcrest that why so dills may also not work

I understand that.. I just wondered why I can't see the 'balance' on my machine, when it seems that most people have a refill key and use it to check the 'balance' on the machines in Pubs/arcades.
I have now find that if I turn the key hold LH2, I get "0:00 BANK 0:00" (No idea what this means.
If turn the key holding LH3, I get into the 'Volume Mode"..
So, I wonder if I am simply not using it correctly?
Should I be able to see the balance using the key?

Interestingly, Other than LH2 and LH3, the other buttons do nothing.
If you hold them down and then turn the key, you just get REFILL.
However, with start, when you turn the key, nothing changes UNTIL you let go of the button (where it says REFILL).
Something is certainly different about the 'start' button over the rest, but it doesn't show the balance

Not necessarily. All my Barcrest machines made after about 2000 haven't shown the hopper balance.
As you said, people sell Refill Keys as 'cheat devices'. Due to this, and availabilty and relative cheapness of the keys, it is any wonder that very few machines will let you see the balance?
Whilst it isn't necessarily cheating, seeing the hopper balance and last bank is something the manufacturers do not want you to see as a player in a licensed premises.
