Yeah, you can tell, it is easier on a -R disc but is very easy on both TBH. Feel free to post a pic of the underside of the disc and I will tell you

dvd+rw! , why did they supply a dvd+rw?
They are not supported by a lot of players and they are more expensive to buy.
It could be ok, but as bencrest says, post a pic and we will soon be able to tell.

Depends on how long the video was, if its only a few minutes it will be maybe 3 - 10 millimetres in width from the centre of the disc that you *should* be able to see.
Have you tried it on a few pc's?

no not all dvds are purple underneath its just widely used
you can get almost any color
burn marks ie darker ring should be visible on nearly all dvds even 4gb of data ones just more difficult

AFAIK there should be about 6 different rings on a disk (doesn't matter what type)
going inside to out:
1. Clear plastic
2. ring for the inner end of the coating on other side
3. Silver for the inner end of the foil
4. Very small ring of un-burned dye
5. Depending on how much data is burned - the darker ring
6. Rest of un-burned dye

stick it in a pc. and go to my computer. and then hover the cursor over the drive and it,ll tell you how much data is on it........
or a s a last resort due to crap shitty media. do a one to one copy with alcohol 100 percent..raw. and use a desent media. not rw....
and if that doesn,t work then at least you got you memories and a nice coaster for yer next brew.

I believe that if the dvd disc is purple the bottom chages in colour but only slightly although you can tell, it goes from a dark purple to a lighter purple

Heres a scan of a G04 [RiVision - Ritek] printed top DVD-R 4x.
Just made this now, found one of the few failed burns that I have of this media [power cut while burning
] - the same colours and stuff apply to almost all DVDs, although different dyes may be different shades of Purple.
I know the filename says G05, but I guarentee this is G04 dye, I cocked up the filename and couldn't be arsed to change it before uploading

Great cheers for the help guys. I had no idea you could see where the burn rings where on blank dvds.
Anyway it wasnt working but i found a free trial of a program called isobuster, which lets you rip out certian files from dvds and is designed for ones that aint working. There was all kind of wierd stuff on it, some jap people, some other people. But got our VOB and then used dvd shrink to backup and burn it.
