Its not actually possible to infect every download you do unless you already are infected with the virus.
I often analyze the source codes of many viruses and open them all the time on a test network to see the payload and packets that are used. in turn i use this info to patch the virus if it ever hits the main network.
Viruses to me are just programs written in the same language and mostly with the same type of system stamp.
Call me old fashioned but i love opening a virus just to see what happens.

I used to write logic bombs in C, nothing 'data destructive' in the whole sense of the word, but would waste a bit of paper, and lock up the keyboard.
Hell, it teaches kids how to program. Don't agree with the 'script-kiddy' stuff about now though, 'lets download this old virus source, add our name and run it', no effort at all, and ultimately easy to contain on a well maintained system.
Mind you, when they found some of my 'experiments' in an archive on a floppy disc of mine, I was suspended for a week pending investigation
Quite a laugh though, security on the school computers was hilarious, lets say that one day when they came into school there was about 200 pages of dumped passwords and usernames

If you havent got any sort of anti-virus/firewall (FREE or paid for) software on your pc these days, then it serves you right if you get a virus!!!!!!!!!

Not true.
I could quite easily surf 24/7 without antivirus and i know i wouldnt get one. download viruses come from porn and warez sites. steer clear of these and you wont have a problem
Clever viruses can be on your machine if a specific port is not closed, antivirus or not if these ports are open your data is theirs.

Your just as likely to get problems downloading updates from microsoft as you are from viruses.... I agree viruses these days are pathetic, where has all the skill gone? Back in the old days I could have released a virus (which I did not, and would not do, but knew how to) that literally would have killed your monitor, and also knacker quite a lot of floppy drives. Thats a real virus - not this mamby pamby vb script stuff.

well said ken, i used to run a BBS on the amiga many years ago.. and viruses really were viruses! anthing from formatting your hard drive DH0: to leaving a shot gun effect off fragments over a floppy disc, rendering it useless.
i remeber the first virus i ever received, it was the byte bandit virus, all it did was copy itself to the boot sector of the next floppy, and count how many times it did so, my virus was number 406!
it seems to me that all viruses do these days, is clogg up a net work with mails etc (yeah really clever..) perhaps i`ll be more understanding when my C: drive refuses to boot

never? never what?
after mouseman, i ran THE CHEESE FACTORY BBS, G$P MtR WHQ. if you gonna call someone a liar, do some ground work first.
if anybody is interested in miggy stuff, ive still got my backup of the BBS (ami-express) though for space reasons i dont think it contains the warez.
when havok was busted by the fear factory, it all went down hill, rather than traders and coders staying together with what was left of the scene, a twat called zoltrix and his merry crew started busting boards that mixed warez and pd. def^base from havok later confessed that the fearfactory were able to completly format his drive from start to finish, most importantly wiping all his work done on ami-ex `doors`
somewhere in the middle of all of this, the police were called in, the fearfactory internet site was traced to a stolen credit card (grimsby as i recal?), and from that point i lost interest in the whole amiga scene, and closed the cheese factory doors forever, with some 100+ active members, that may not seem alot compared to this site, but on a single land line, it constantly rang.

100 users back then would be like 100 thousand users these days, as there are more people on the net now..
When I was a lad
the graphics card had real hardware registers that could control scan frequency, and the raster positioning etc, so you could literally make the monitor "blow up" or burn out (also on some monitors it could affect peoples health, one reason I never actually did it)
Floppies could be made to step further than they should, causing the heads to literally fall off.....
Lots of fun, but no one ever did it, as they had more sense back then....
Now virus writers are kids, with no brains, who dont care who is infected (ie they dont give a s**t if say they for example disable the emergency services, they attack at random)
Problem these days is even the "virus experts" are usually clueless, one major internationally respected authority on them, I personally knew in the past, ans she (although cute as f*ck) is not someone I would rely on to fix even a simple problem with my pc, never mind ask advice from about viruses.....
