Just a general question aimed at the more technically minded folks.....

Now I know the question has been touted before at the Mecca and Jackpotty forums, and my aim sort of fits in to this, but is more to do with backing stuff up, with the idea to transfer it to a spare MPU etc.

Has anyone been able to work out if it's feasible to run a backup from such flash based systems?

Just got in a Red Gamind Show Us The Mummy (My first proper machine ever on MPU5), and from what I remembered, there are two sorts of game card, an EPROM based one, and another one which I have never seen before..... till now!

As you can probs tell, I have the "other" card, which looks to be flash based, and main way to flash new game files, is by way of a CF card, and looking at the tech guide, seams pretty easy to do game updates via test mode..... now what is not clear, is how do you transfer the data from one game card to another in the event of an MPU / Gamecard fault, or are you forced to go to whomever made the game, and may poss end up paying an extra fee for the required game files, assuming they still have copies of them, bearing in mind the copyright date on this machine is 2007.

Now one way of extracting the data I have been thinking of, is the same idea of doing mod's on these Sky NowTV (Basically a limited version of a Roku 3), and that is using JTAG, but that is fraught with problems itself, needing some good understanding of the protocol, also noting that not all hardware systems out there use this common programming protocol.

Just had a chat with Mr P's main techie, and he's been kind enough to tell what he has experienced, and yes he's gone down the JTAG route on the very same MPU5 flash game card.....

Once the data is in the flash roms the only way to extract them is to remove the chips and read them, you wont be able to use the jtag, I have tried that and not all connections from the flash are connected to the jtag controller chip so your not able to map all the flash pins, well that's what I found! I was trying to change the bootstrap version without having to remove the flash chips and program them, but that's the only way I found so far.

But updating the card with a new updated game is not difficult.
