Deal or No Deal - The Big Deal - Incorrect values and resetting?

Best Answer Bencrest, 11 June 2014 - 06:12 PM

Right - I managed to fix the wonky box values today!

I decided to take the cover off the Scorpion 4 board just to make sure the obvious stuff was OK - and make sure there wasn't any battery damage e.t.c.

Decided to unplug the connectors on the Scorpion 4 board that run to the LED breakout board - and the bottom pin of the bottom LED output on the mainboard was bent at a right angle (not in the connector) - bad fitment when the previous operator presumably swapped a board over.

Bent the pin back into place, refitted connectors, fired up - and now the boxes display correctly!! Wish all jobs were that simple :D

So I've still got a duff(ish) PSU, but at least all the values are now correct. Will help if / when I come to sell it on :)

Worth anyone else with 'wonky' values checking the connectors on theirs too :)

Hey all,

Got a new machine yesterday, a Bell Fruit Deal Or No Deal - The Big Deal - which is a 2008 machine on Scorpion 4 (thank god, as I have Scorpion 4 spares!).

Anyway, it's generally OK, but there's some odd behaviour.

Firstly, the 7 segment box values are wrong - at least on the right hand side (the red values, the left hand blue values seem fine). £70 boxes are showing as £30, and when the boxes increase (much like they do on Crazy Chair, Perfect Game, e.t.c.) they start at say £20, go to £30, back to £0, then up to £30 again (when the displayed value should be £70!).

Secondly - it has reset on me twice now. It's not what I'd consider a 'random' reset though - it seems to be repeatable. The two times it has done it have been after pressing 'deal' at during the DOND game, when I've had an odd offer. For example, when I've had £2 and £8 left, and it's offered £1.20 (which is clearly wrong as the offer is below the minimum box value).

The 'offer' 7 segs, which show the bankers offer, are normally OK, but again they show £30.00 during attract, when they should show £70.00 as that is the jackpot the machine is set to.

Other than these two things, it's fine and I'm happy with it, plays a pretty nice game and has the box matrix (inc. red lamps) which is good as I quite enjoy that type of feature entry.

I also uploaded a video I took earlier to see the wonky boxes in action, and in case anyone wants to hear me waffle on for 10 minutes :)

Cheers for that! It pretty much ticked all my boxes for my next machine purchase, although I'd still like a £35/£70 video (like Rainbow Riches / Elvis / Monty Python) or a £500 B3 along the same lines.

I can only assume that the problem with the box values is going to be a fault with the board that drives them, but I may go ahead and fiddle with the connectors just in case. There's just so many of the damn things! :)

Teeny tiny update to this -

I've got another LED driver board coming next week, so hopefully that'll sort out the boxes playing up.

I did get another reset earlier - yet again it was on the DOND board. I had 2 x £5 blue boxes left, pressed NO DEAL, then Noel said his usual 'open the box' thing, and then it just went off and re-initialised.

Strange. Like I say, I'd normally point a finger at the PSU being the culprit, but it's weird it only does it on the DOND game and only when it comes to the box-opening bit (when the lamps come on behind the mirror reel).

Does that possibly mean a short or something involving those lamps? I suppose I'll have to keep investigating. But hopefully the new LED board will sort it :D

Ben does it only reset when you press the 'NO Deal' button?

If so then the wiring or the switch itself might be faulty, do you have a spare to try?

Sorry, but I'm just trying to think of the easiest/cheapest things to try first :)

Nah, because I 'no deal' all the time, I'm one of the people that never deals (unless the deal is jackpot or similar!). I thought it might have been when I dealt on the offer, in which case it could be the 'deal' button doing it, but I'm pretty sure the last time it did it was when I pressed the 'no deal' button but previous times it was when I pressed the 'deal' button.

It's well after the button press too - after pressing the button there's a couple of seconds delay while Noel talks, and then it resets. I'll catch it and upload it at some point.

Many thanks for the suggestion though. Like I say, any help / advice / suggestions are always greatly appreciated :)

I'm wondering if it could be some kind of short involving the lamps behind the mirror reel? After all I don't think they are lit at any point until the conclusion of the DOND game. If they are though, it's still intermittent.

I'm sure I'll get it going 100% in the end. Still happy with the machine and the price I paid, and the seller (with whom I've dealt over the past 10 years or so) is a good bloke, so I'll all be good.

Got same problem on a "Family Guy - Booze Hound" Machine, LED Values on red panel and offer Segments.... £70 box displays £71 and £50 shows £51, and £20 shows up as £31 so you never know what you're winning, or what you're being offered.. Problems same for attract mode too! :)

Yup, glad it's almost fully working :)

Sellier is popping around another PSU at some point to see if that solves the resets, it should do. He's a nice chap who I've used several times over the past 2 years, but is quite a small operation so doesn't have the technical support of a much larger operation.

Can't argue with his prices though :D

Made a hash of that - used him for the past 10 years, not 2 :)

As for the PSUs, I've now got 3 Scorpion 4 machines in use (Club Clouseau, Monopoly Road to Riches, and this DOND). I've also got 2 x Sanken Scorpion 4 PSUs from machines I've broken for spares.

Quite tempted to see if the ones in my other machines are Sankens too. If there's one that's the 'better' make (is it Stadium?) then I'll swap that into DOND and see how I get on.

I'll also look into overhauling all the PSUs, replacing the caps at the minimum and seeing what happens :D
