With all the recent talk of bandwidth costs, would it not be prudent to use a bit-torrent tracker to host layouts with?

As long as there was some moderation so that people couldn't start sharing films/music etc, and kept to FME only, it wouldn't be a legal risk, and would dramatically cut down the sites bandwidth usage.

The best thing you can do is set a 25mb limit to upload an special uploads can be requested and moderators would approve upload, Something similar to mediafire.

I was going to post the exact same thing last night (creepy, I wrote the whole post and everything but didn't submit).

The only issue I could think of was how to host - if it was individual files, it could be awkward with files needing posts for people to 'reseed', but if it was whole packs then it could be frustrating for people.

Well the datted sets, as well as various unemulated BBS dumps, t7z, is over 120gig.

There wouldn't be any point (for the moment at least) in there being any more content than is already hosted (unless there are already layouts available elsewhere which are missing from the DB here).

I would suggest the same as games are now, so a torrent file per layout (the .gam, .dat etc). and another torrent for the ROMs.

It would need a dedicated person/small group to go through the layouts and host them to begin with.

With amber being aimed at the higher resolutions, some layouts could break 100MB with different JP/Decal options and high res artwork. Not the sort of size that the forums can host without major bandwidth costs.

The issue that I have is that we - in my opinion - have a large proportion of 'leechers' here. Don't take me wrong, the posting community is fine and people have a right to leech, I'd just be a little concerned that you'd end up with a very small base of users willing to seed the full 'works', and not enough seeders of everything.

Might not be an issue though - like I said I was going to suggest BT myself as a way of sharing content.

I did say above that I wasn't sure about individual files e.t.c, then I remembered that when building up some abandonwarez and what-not, many of them were HUGE torrents, but because the files were archived individually within the torrent, you could pick and choose what you wanted without having to download the complete set - that might be an option?

I'd love to say I'd be willing to seed but I don't pay for the internet here. I am looking at moving to an FTTC connection but would need to look into usage constraints - Sky on normal their Unlimited package have been very lenient with me, but I'd hate to get a faster connection and then be hammered for potentially uploading TBs of data over a month.

BT does seem to be the way forward though. 'Upload' sites are too problematic and the forum costs do seem too high, and BT seems very easy to implement. I'd do what I could to help (within reason!).

Virgin are good with their monthly limits, Some months I have downloaded and uploaded like a few terabytes both ways and never had an issue from them about it.

TBH I download and upload quite a bit every month :)

I think this idea would be great but as said there is a lot of leechers and I bet a lot of them will hit and run.

Google drive has 15gb of free space if you have a gmail account. Which is also free.

Here's starter pack for mfme 9.4.

Not all file hosts are problematic, Mega, Billionuploads and 180upload are quiet reliable and generous with their free service (no prompts to buy premium etc) and are unlikely to receive DMCA take down requests so the files should remain hosted for long periods of time. I have about 80KB/Sec upload from Sky Unlimited and never sought to seed in the past due to inconvenience of storing the files. I prefer to rename and relocate the files after download to either archive or delete them.

I have over several terabytes of free storage but don't want to be storing and seeding junk (the entire dat of emulations) Id rather just seed the most recent up to date layouts for each emulation. 50GB max that should be several times more than what is needed.. as my Fruit Machine folder is under 2GB and most of that is high res photos for folder cover display.

I have a few spare hard drives and would be more then happy to fill them with the FME stuff for seeding or back up

I use loads of torrents sites already private ones. but if storage and a server like Cliff has or like you say bit torrent I would be happy to help host or seed to keep it all from vanishing

The main question is, can Duplu or Pete W set up an FME tracker?
