Hey guys. Just saw a topic here about lockbuster not powering up. I thought I'd download Tommy C's MFME 10.1 version, and I was going through the samples while the machine booted up. I found out that sound 21 is from an old toy called a speak&spell but Bell Fruit have enhanced it with echo. Whenever you pressed a key on it, it used to make a series of 4 beeps of varying tones for example when you turned it on, off, selected a game to play etc. I hated the voice, but I actually got back into it whenever I listen to the film E.T. with audio description. That has to be one of my classics along with toy story, yes I have all 3 of them on DVD! There is one machine, I think it's blazing Trails that has a quote from the first Toy Story, "Don't even think about it, cowboy!" Please correct me if I'm wrong. It sounds like Buzz lightyear talking to Woody when he thinks he's a space ranger and Woody opens his helmet. Kind regards, Thomas.

does anyone remember the old Speak&Spell?

Yes I do M8. I am trying to find one, keep looking in all the charity shops, but no luck. Not surprised as they go for very silly money. Kraftwerk used them on their Computer World album and that's another reason why people want them.
Strange as they were a terrible example of voice synthesis, comical in fact. A million miles from the the one Stephen Hawkins uses.
There is an Emulator for the speak and spell machine, though i think the website is no longer about.
I will try and attach a zip file with it in, if it does not work, then let me know and I can PM you it.
Have Fun
It's more fun to compute!!!

Didn't need to download it, got it already! Works like a treat on Windows 7, just needed to download MSVBVM50.dll, got that, and it works great. I also got the US version. That is the most familiar one from the E.T. film. Does anyone know how to change the font size to small fonts on Windows 7? It's just that's what the readme says to do. Thanks, Thomas. Now spell fruit-emu. M F M E that is incorrect! the correct spelling of fruit-emu is f, r, u, I, t, e, m, u! I win! beep.beep.beep.beep!

Yes a maths one, that's even rarer.
'I have finished' mentioned in his post MSVBVM50.dll Perhaps that might do the trick. If not just Google for the Virtual Basic Dll site, there are a load on there that might do the trick.
Here's the US Version!!!!

The US version may be worse, but it is the most familiar. I actually think the English one is more worse than the American one! Yes I used to have AT&T, only that was on my XP machine which is knackered. They are so much better. The current synthesizers to go for is either Nuance Vocalizer (previously known as RealSpeak), Eloquence which comes with the JAWS software or NeoSpeech. For the Mac, I would highly recommend the Alex voice which sounds like he breathes! There are also Vocalizer compact and premium voices, don't go compact! It sounds like the person has a major cold! These voices are available on the iPhone and iPad as well.

Looked everywhere, but I don't think there's a speak&maths or even a speak&read emulator out there, sorry guys! The guys who did SASS said they would do one, but I can't find it anywhere.

Yes, I think they all sound quite rubbish. Many years ago 30+ I had a Korg vocoder, a keyboard you could play music and talk through. It was very hard work as the voice triggered the sound, so you had to keep talking/singing to get any sound out of it.
Kraftwerk were the pioneers in this field. Florian Schneider used custom built Senhesier and latterly Doepfer machines and then designing and building his own.
Computer generated voice, there is only one HAL, from 2001. Daisy daisy give me your answer do.........
I make no excuses, I think voice synthesis in any form is an interesting subject, serious applications or just as a matter of interest.
Ricardo.
PS. Looks as though the SASS website has gone. Never come across an Emu for the Maths version!!
