I face the problem of fruit machines not fitting on the screen because my tft monitor wont go any higher 1024 x 768 pixles so its a bit of a pain, they never tell you this at the time of buying them lol, have to agree it's a great site and this is my first ever post, whooo lol, I hope you all have a great christmas and an even better new year, keep up the good work.

Some of us are working on rereleasing 1280 machines as 1024 layouts, as like the way they don't take up ALL of my 17" screen

I always thought this was a bit shit of PC manufacturers to flood the market with cheapy TFT screens which are rarely any better in display quality (and sometimes worse!) than a standard monitor. They often only go as high as 1024 x 768 and if you go lower than this rez then the picture is just blurry.
Personally I work at 1280 x 1024 at work and 1600 x 1200 at home. For me 1024 x 768 just looks clunky now. Kinda like working at 640 x 480 when 1024 x 768 was the highest available in the old days.

TBH I'm not aware of ANY TFT which gives better quality than a normal CRT monitor

Can't argue with that
Hence why I've been waiting for the last 2 years to buy one for home. We've recently got two 17" IIYAMA TFTs in the office which go up to 1280 x 1024 and they're probably the best I've seen.

Main problems I see with them are
a) Backlights which give patchy coverage, so that say the top corners appear darker than the rest of the screen, and
Pixel response times. Try playing a game with a very high frame rate on a Laptop screen and you will see what I mean, everything goes blurry and blends together.
The latest cheap 17" TFTs would be more than adequate for general office/web surfing, and even FME, but I'm not sure about watching DVDs, action games, that kind of stuff
Heres some links to the cheap TFTs :
http://www.microdire...?ProductID=7154
17", with speakers, approx £132 inc VAT, without delivery though.
http://www.eclipseco...cat=115&brand=2
17" various, approx £140 inc VAT, without delivery.
EDIT] These links were correct at the time of posting, prices may vary with age, as can the links to the monitors

It was only earlier in the year when 15" monitors started to drop below the £200 mark

I use a 17" TFT screen at work running 1152x864 and it's absolutely atrocious.
Just tilting your head slightly with them produces slight colour variations which ain't much good when you're trying to colour correct a photo
Still at least I'm getting a nice 21" CRT screen soon...

On a serious note, my laptop has a 15" TFT capable of 1024.
Not great but I love my lappy
2.6 P4
512 Ram
64 MB ATI Radeon 9000
16x DVD RW
all for £550

Mines a 1.3 Centrino, 5 hours battery life [4 if watching Divx, 3 watching DVD, 2 playing Vice City ], Radeon 9000 [only 32mb ] 512mb DDR and a CD-RW for £400 [+£20 delivery ].
I think the best deal at the moment was Staples, had an Acer Centrino with 64mb Radeon 9700 for £599.
I use a 17" LG CRT Flatron at home, and think I'll be using CRT for the forseeable future. Stunning picture quality, and as long as you don't want to carry it [it weighs 30kg ], it's the best monitor I've used before
