Asking for my friend, he has a pub and a cafe and would like to know the legal jargon for what type of slot machines he can have in his premises. His pub only opens next week, he has a 10p £5 machine in there, the cafe doesn't have one.
From the information I was told a while ago, you could have a 10p £8 machine but would only require a gaming permit, the big £70 machines cost a lot more.
Then there's the thing with what category they are

The cafe wont be allowed one (unless its alcohol licensed iirc), the pub should be allowed up to 2 machines from a standard permit, which he would need to apply for (quite cheap, check your local council for details), as a pub you can apply for a permit for upto 4 machines quite easily via the same channels.
As for the actual machine licensing, I believe it changed recently with the introduction of AMLD (Amusement Machine License Duty), exactly how that works I'm not too sure, someone more knowledgable will be along shortly.

Thanks for the reply. Can he have a SWP in his cafe? do they need a licence?
So as far as the pub goes, 2 or less machines, 20p £8 token or 10p £5 cash.
More input please peeps!

Rules on AWPs in licensed premises:
The pub can have any jackpot awp installed - Any jackpot over £5 - £8 needs AMLD ( Amusement Machine License Duty ) payed in advance to HMRC.
Jackpots of £5 - £8 does not need AMLD to be payed.
Cafes can use any SWP, Video game as these are not licensed products.
Fine for any unlicensed AWP is £10000 per machine so not really worth the risk as HMRC do check.
Personally a good video game can take good money in the right location - There are also dedicated SWP games just for the cafe/ Takeaway outlets.
Best wishes
