Hi all,

I have redundant icons in my Notification Area / System Tray on XP, the Icons are those of old uninstalled programs, or just rubbish diallers that have been automatically downloaded. What’s the software that allows you to remove them?

Many Thanks.

John.

I would assume that any icons found in the system tray would still be active? If they appear at startup, then find out what the bits of software are, and then I'd recommend going into Regedit, to Hkey_Local_Machine/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current_Version/Run [I don't like MSconfig, makes my startup REALLY SLOW.

Delete the keys there that relate to the software that you want to remove, and that should sort out SOME of the icons. Not sure of any software that can do it for you :(

Or Start>Settings>Taskbar and Start Menu......

As you can see the Customize option will allow you to add/hide etc....though this won't remove the program of course.

I'm always surprised by the stuff that I should know but don't :D

I think I'll go back to DOS 6.22 now :)

But your way BB will locate the program itself mate...allowing you to delete it fully.....The way I said is only the icon.

I see what your all saying, but I have fully uninstalled the programs, even using clean sweep, but there still there, not all are in the System Tray, some are inactive in the 'Properties' of the taskbar. There all on 'Hide when not in use' but they shouldnt be there! :)

Right now I see.........all that has happened is when you removed the program all little 'bits' get left behind---DLL's etc...

Have you tried using search and deleting all the traces that have been left manually? (Do a restore point first to make sure)

:D msconfig

But does running that delete it from the taskbar menu?

I know it stops it running and booting up.

But Amber wants to remove the programs!........My post as stated was a quick fix to delete from the start menu......BB suggested a way to delete the files..........

Using msconfig will not delete or remove!....just stop them from loading.

you need a registry cleaner. I use RegVac, really good at getting rid of the traces of programs which get left behind after uninstalls
