well for a fellow scarborian
Kernel32.dll file handles memory management, input/output operations, and interrupts. One of the most important system dll's, which organises everything. Basically if this files gets corrupt you will get alsorts of errors

what operating system are you running? if its xp and you have just installed sp2 it might be a software conflict, apparently sp2 has loads of them. If you have win2000 pro I can send you a clean kernel32.dll
common problems with the file are caused by viruses. I installed windows the otherday and within 20 minutes of connecting to the internet to update via windows update my computer caught a worm virus. These days it seems you don't even have to run a file or visit a dodgy site to get caught as the only site i visited was windows update..
If you haven't got anti virus software on get some on your system and run a full scan, make sure windows update is fully up to date as some of these updates are likely to replace the dll with a fresh clean one, run a spyware program such as adware

jeez lol, how many icons on your taskbar, i have 3 lol
I suggest you alter the settings of all them programs so they only run when you start them and need them. I am not surprised you have problems with all them programs running, your system must handle like a dog.
Also look in the startup folder in your startmenu and delete any of the programs you don't need to load automatically at start up.
The best way to run your system is lean and mean, you will get a lot less trouble that way.
Also you might want to look at this if you installed sp2 for xp

definately sounds like a virus to me, probably best to format. it used to be if you were careful what programs you ran you'd never get infected , nowadays just connecting to the internet with an none up-to-date windows leaves you open to all kinds of port scanning worms.
If you haven't got one i recommend investing in a anti-virus program. I personally use norton internet security 2003. Once you have one installed and up-to-date scan all your harddrives and any non-original disks with programs you install on
One thing thats puzzles me, how did you overwrite the kernall32.dll file? Its a vital system file that windows protects. DId you do it in safe mode?

I use Panda Platinum internet security and i did a virus scan and it didnt find anything and i did a spyware check nothing.
i overwrit that file by going into safe mode putting the new one in then renameing the old one then moving it to desktop then restarted but then the computer wouldnt start lol.

shoudln't have stopped you booting, you mums laptop has sp2 on too? they would need to be at the same level of been up to date, otherwise windows will probably think the file has been infected and reject it.
As for your original problem, if it happens, it might be due to software conflicting with each other, the amount of software icons you had in the taskbar was extordinary lol. The leaner you keep your system the better everything will run
fingers crossed everything runs smoothly for you
edit just read your post which happened while i was typing
sorry to hear that mate
( hope it all works out ok and without costing anything
