Ok so I have a Rat Race in poor condition, well, poor isnt the word really (f****d would be more apt), anyway its a Ratty so its restoration time.
The MPU3 and PSU need work before I dare plug it in but that side is well in hand. The glasses are in good nick, artwork isnt spotless but its very good.
I have now moved it to the workshop and job one has to be a new cabinet, the old one is floppy from halfway downwards.
I have had various ideas with the cabinet but my two main options are
1) Get a donor cab.
I dont like this idea, although its the easy option. A donor cab just means you are depriving another machine of restoration, and MPU3 should be preserved as much as possible.
2) Build one.
I have pretty much chosen to take this option already but that leads to more questions.
Being of the younger(ish) generation of members I would quite like to put it in an up to date style cabinet, so front opening with gas struts and maybe some LED wash lighting in the surround.
The machine may well go back into service next year so it has to be day to day practical. The game itself will be left original (2p £1.50)
Is it wrong to not stay original, what's the concencus? Also does anyone have any tips on cabinet making. I have an antique restorer friend who will help but obviously he doesnt build fruit machine cabinets so anything to look out for?
