I am correct in assuming you mean how to do a layout first you need to get the roms for the specific game you want to make a layout for (one that runs in the mfme (theres a lot that dont hence thats why there not done yet)) then find the artwork for the machine (or do a classic (one which hasnt got any artwork available)) then check out the knowledgebase section of the forum and there will be a step by step guide on how to create layouts.
then spend some time getting used to creationg a layout.

In the words of Roy Castle..dedications what you need.
If your serious about making a layout..youll need a good program Adobe Photoshop for example..and ye need to be prepared for hours..weeks..or months of hard work and commitment.
Not sure of the 'step by step' instructions..im sure there is a tutorial in the forums you can read up on..and the other layout guys can give you pointers.
But like i says..you need to be prepared to 'get in about it' as the skill..time and hard work these guys put into thier layouts is something i couldnt do.

Builds up in 20 weekly parts...just like the TV ads
How difficult would it be for one of the creators to provide a weekly step by step guide to emulating a machine?
By choosing a machine that’s they have done in the past, and one that they would consider low on a difficulty scale, perhaps myself and others might get a better appreciation of the work involved by attempting to create our own.
It could lead to a whole new generation of emulators.
Anyone up for the project?

Create an Emulation you mean?
To make an Emulator is what I class as the 'hardware' and thats just what a SINGLE member within the 'scene' is doing right now...yup a single member, thats what an Emulator involves.
Now back to an Emulation, Ross did an 'all-in-One' ages back that you can get here Creating an Emulation we now await new layouts! (kidding of course lol).
What you suggest has already been done, but rather that en mass, you'll find nothing beats a good 1-2-1 that 99.9% of designers are happy to assist with, saying that ross's video allows you to work as a 1-2-1 would but at your pace.

Best thing to do to start is simply to load an already completed layout in to one of the versions of the emulator that has design tools and play around with it. Redoing the graphics etc in photoshop. It's pretty easy to get to grips with to be honest, doing a layout is simple it's doing the classic that's hard - those are the guys who do the hardest work. You could just load a classic and add your own graphics over the top to do a simple to do layout.

I read somewhere on the site, probably when browsing the tutorials when I first joined, that classics are the hardest to do. This proves that I and many others are completely ignorant of what is involved in their creation. When I first seen a classic view I thought the designer had not made much of an effort and it looked half finished, but now I have a little more understanding.
I have played about a little in the design mode. My eyesight is not too good and I strain them after a short period of play peering at the small reel symbols on some of the games. I moved the reels to the empty right hand side of the screen and doubled their size. It worked fine but was detrimental to the aesthetics.
My next question, if I did begin to design my own versions would it be possible to split the machine in half. For example, Public Enemy No1, could I have the reels and buttons taking up the whole screen and then only the feature board filling the screen when on the feature. Would that be considered sacrilege by the disciples of fruit-emu, or am I trying to run before I can walk. If it can be done why hasn’t it? and help us with failing vision.

I did make a video on how to make a lamp from start to finish but as it was 11m 29 seconds youtube would not let me upload it to there. I will try and do some easy to follow steps which will be in video format but will try and make it just under 10 minutes, it was only because my laptop was slow on loading photoshop and the emu which is why it went over 10 minutes.

It depends TBH if the machine has not been emulated before then its a case of finding the lamps then doing the dx. MPU5 and sc4 are the best to do because in test mode it will say what lamp is what. Some of the older machines are hit n miss as you have to play it to death to find all the lamps which is probable what I will have to di with BWB's volcano.

I had created a rough guide, a while ago to give a basic guide to learning some of the tools, i did try to upload it to the tutorials, but got an error saying i haven't permission, check your p.m.Builds up in 20 weekly parts...just like the TV ads
