Went into my local Alliance & Leicester Branch to withdraw my wages which was around £500 so I gave the guy my card told him I want £500 out and he says Brian so I said yes and sign the slip they give you... Anyway they don't even look atthe signature or don't ask for ID for such a large sum of money... So anyone that has your bank card and knows your date of birth can simply withdraw all your cash...
What a joke!

barcalys have this new little machine you have to take with you know it has a unique code to it so they know its you also the code changes every 12 weeks

Maybe there's more "behind the scenes" work you don't know about, like comparing signatures from past slips etc. They should do more to present the customer with a sense of security though.
My worst encounter was going throgh passport control a couple years back, and them not checking my passport...Only my boarding pass...This was at a time when there were 3 terrorists on the run as well.

but in all honesty in my younger days i was dating a lass from leicester and she was a customer of alliance and leicester. and when she had her monthly wage put into her account it showed £950 more than she thought. it turns out AoL put someone else's wages into her account aswell.

I would be surprised if they went to this trouble, some places are just really lax.
I rang my broadband provider the other day to update my details and the guy gave me a hint to my password! Hardly state-of-the-art security.

It's not the case of the guy reconising me as I very rarely withdraw money out of the bank itself... but as I said he never even looked at my signature at the back of the card to compare it with the payment slip that I had just signed....

Dosent matter how careless my bank are with my bank details etc..no-one would take any money out of my account anyway.

Seriously though, we can all comment on how poor security is, but would we like the alternative which I am sure would involve 16 character passwords made up of capital letters, small letters, at least 2 numbers and having to make a noise like a small mammal. And then you would be forced to change it every other day. The alternative of retinal scans would be prohibitively expensive unless we all wanted to give up free banking to pay for it.
It doesn't take much to compare signatures, but is also doesn't take much to forge one either. I have no answers but I do know that any alternative would make our lives more complicated or cost us dearly.

I'd be thinking about changing banks if they are that careless and not asking for id is wrong as it could be any fooker trying to get your cash.

Apologies Brian - I am normally so careful with my posts too.
I still believe that increasing security will either be enormously inconvenient or cost us more in terms of bank charges to fund the measures. I am not saying it is wrong to want those things, but the banks probably look at it that they would rather reimburse the odd £500 that is stolen rather than spend millions preventing that theft - the law of dimishing returns.
Look at it this way;
- you have the card
- it has not been reported stolen
- there is no pattern of strange transactions on the card
- they are CCTV recording every customer
There are security measures being invoked even if you don't see them or recognise them. I am not protecting their position, I hate crime all aspects, but I am also a pragmatist and one who likes an easy life.
I hate the extra half hour wait to get through security at an airport - I understand and appreciate the additional safety it brings me when getting on a plane, but I still consider it a massive tit when travelling by plane - it also costs more in airport fees which are passed on to me through my ticket price, I don't like that aspect but have to cough up anyway.
As theft from a bank is not a matter of life and death I am probably happy with the status quo, i.e. the risk of theft from my account is slightly raised but I get free banking and shorter queues at the desks of a lunchtime in exchange; I'll live with that.

NatWest use something similar to that, but for on-line banking.
It's a pain in the bum to use.

natwest use a chip and pin system.
you have to insert your card into a chip and pin machine and enter your 4 digit code.
which i think is a good idea and all banks and building society's should use this method

natwest do actually use this chip and pin over the counter now not like the old days of just signing the slip and handing it back to the cashier.
maybe they should all follow suit
