If you use search, or even just scroll to the bottom of this One you'll see similar threads...

I think you will see this has been asked more than once!

1..We encourage debating and discussion, however we will not tolerate rudeness, insulting posts, personal attacks or purposeless inflammatory posts.

2..Before creating a new thread, please be sure to use our “search feature” to ensure that this subject has not been brought up already. In a lot of cases your question may have already been asked and answered to death .

3..Advertising, spamming and trolling is not allowed. This includes using the forum email and Private message system to spam other members.

4..There are no set rules against the use of swearing in the forums, but users should only really apply it where appropriate. Inserting swear words in every post doesn't make a user look "tough" or "clever". In fact to most people, it comes across as a literacy deficiency. Posters who frequently use excessive levels of profanity may be cautioned to tone it down. In no way, will the usage of racial, religious, ethnical or sexual discrimination be allowed on our forums. This may lead to definite banning.

5..The posting of adult links, banners, or any other material that promotes pornographic material is prohibited.

6..Respect our staff , Any abuse towards our Admins or moderators may result in a banned account immediately.

7..Moderators/Admins reserve the right to close or delete threads or posts that aren't relevant to the topic being discussed.

8..Shouts may be edited or removed by a Moderator at their discretion (or taken into consideration from a complaint from another member) and the poster sent a PM or email why, they will also be warned that they could receive a ban from posting future 'shouts' should it continue.

That is all very good Mr todd1970 however since they are the 'rules' what happens to those who break them?

How can you sanction someone for breaking #2?

Well..ye dont i spose however with 'newer' members going off on one because thier question does not get answered or gets a smart reply it was to draw thier attention to the fact the forum rules should be read first.

So in essence is there any point to having it as a 'rule' if it cannot be sanctioned? Is it in fact just a guideline?

Lets not go 'down that road' Geddy......:skeptical:

Guidelines...rules...whatever.....

Lets be totally honest and fair here, you have a joke at the threads, we have a joke at the threads so does Uncle Herberts next door neighbour.....

You are being picky and arguementative since I commented on your reply on another thread :biglaugh: (those that don't see the joke now sits up lol)

Appart from the jokes etc, the rules needed an update, and Todd did a good job don't you think? I certainly do.....as a member of FE from dot you know the score and we all (Mods and members alike) welcome constructive feed-back in order to create a 'level' that's in plain English.

Why not just send a PM rather than create friction, I mean we all read these posts and reply to them...the idea of the new 'rules' (defined?) may be open to question and you may well be a better judge, in which case i'm sure Todd/we would happily consider re-wording, adding or removing some bulletpoints.

Number 1?

1..We encourage debating and discussion, however we will not tolerate rudeness, insulting posts, personal attacks or purposeless inflammatory posts.

I am simply debating/discussing the point of having rules if they are not rules or indeed sanctionable. Let's face it members are not going to be arsed about rules if nothing happens to them if they break them, correct?

Lets be totally honest and fair here, you have a joke at the threads, we have a joke at the threads so does Uncle Herberts next door neighbour.....

I try to make my point (whatever it is hehe) in a light hearted fashion if/when possible. However recently (today) I have not been joking in the replies I have made to people who are just plain lazy.

You are being picky and arguementative since I commented on your reply on another thread :biglaugh: (those that don't see the joke now sits up lol)

To be fair I did not think your comment was out of line at all, in fact I thought you were agreeing with me, I best read it again. Thus I am not being picky or argumentative because of that. I am posting in the manner I am because I am fed up of the same old shite being posted time after time to this site and nothing really being done. After all we are talking rule #2 here... ;)

So I best sit up because I did not or do not see the 'joke.'

Appart from the jokes etc, the rules needed an update, and Todd did a good job don't you think? I certainly do.....as a member of FE from dot you know the score and we all (Mods and members alike) welcome constructive feed-back in order to create a 'level' that's in plain English.

Of course rules etc need updating and generally should be reviewed every so often or more if certain trends creep in. My constructive 'feed-back' as it where (and I asked without answer on the rule thread) was to ask what sanctions are to be taken for those who break the rules? I think in essence the rules are fine however if nothing happens to the rule breakers then by definition they are useless.

Why not just send a PM rather than create friction, I mean we all read these posts and reply to them...the idea of the new 'rules' (defined?) may be open to question and you may well be a better judge, in which case i'm sure Todd/we would happily consider re-wording, adding or removing some bulletpoints.

Like I said this is not really about the rules as such they are fine and even mentioning the rules has took the 'topic' a bit off track.

IMO I am not creating friction and I am 'saddened' you think I am. All I am doing to trying to put across that folks are still posting the same old toss time after time and nothing is being done. Eventually the Muppets will take over and then you will lose all the good posts/topics and dare I say it members along the way.

As for posting PMs I would do that if I ever felt the need what I wanted to say should be 'private' other wise it goes on the forum just in case some one actually reads it and thinks (in today's cases) 'I think I will search about screen res and or roms/layouts before I just take the easy option and post what might have already been posted about 1000 times.'

This isn't about rules or FME for that matter, its about USING forums.

The likes of Geddy, Ady and myself have been using forums for years now and pretty know about forum etiquette. I reckon that the majority of people who post 'pish' (hate that term) are relatively new to forums in general and are not that familiar with how to use them properly - hence they take the easy short cut and make a thread solely about what they want to know. For them its far quicker than trawling though thousands of threads without the guarantee that the information they want will be there.

The shoutbox (and yes I've mentioned this to the other staff) makes matters even worse as they see that as an opportunity to get their query answered straight away without a thought as to whether their question has been asked before.

I don't think there's an easy answer to this problem because as long as there are people signing up, you'll always get those who want their problems solved a.s.a.p. and sod the consequences.

I think at the end of the day, it's up to the members to help police this sort of thing. After all, we are a community and this place is out home. If people choose to sign up and use the forum correctly and politely, then theres no problem.

If on the otherhand, a member joins up and doesn't use forum etiquette, their first post being a question thats easily found using the search function, or a demand for this or that, then they should be shot down in flames.

Consequences for breaking rule/guideline 2 by posting 'pish' as you guys say, the post is deleted without question, or thread locked with a message telling the member to read the rules.

Or we could just go on about how nasty such things are and pretty much do nothing about it except moan.

As for the shout box. Is there any way that can be disabled for members with less than say 50 posts? I'm sure by the time they have 50 posts, they will have some idea on how things are expected around here.

Well I have sort of been trying to do that. I think as an older member it is a sort of 'duty.' Problem is you get shot down for doing it so you cannot really win. :(

TBH I do not see any need for it what so ever. I hardly see anything useful posted there and if people what to use it like a chat box rather than a shout box then they should use IRC or MSN etc. For me the shout box should only be used to announce 'news' maybe even just by admin/mods etc. Like a news ticker or something. However if it is to run as it is then yeah restrict it to more seasoned members... ;)
