Hi (been a long time since I was here)
I downloaded the Place your bets DX game and the roms, but when I open the game it says "roms not found" and "sound file not found"
I tried putting the roms folder in the MFME folder, I also tried puting it into the actual Place your bets folder. Am I puting them in the wrong place or is there another problem?
Please assume I am a total novice, I havent attemtped to play one of these games in years, and have a memory like a sieve.
thanks in advance for any advice.
PS
I use XP and a pretty new PC with 3GB ram and what I think is a reasonable graphics card.

The roms, and sound files should be in the same folder as the layout. Open the '.gam' file up, with notepad, and make sure the rom names all match-up to what the .gam file says.

okay, did that.
System MPU4
DIP 1 00000000
DIP 2 00000100
Delay 100
Volume 0
Stake 3
Jackpot 3
Percentage 10
SetPercent 90
TotalIn 170
TotalOut 0
Played 8
Layout pyb2.dat
Sound PYBSND.P1
Sound PYBSND.P2
ROM PYB06S.P1
the four files listed ARE there. But now when I open the game it doesnt do anything at all. It looks good, but wont actually play.

If it's not giving you a rom not found error now, it is probably down to the speed settings. Click on the "Configuration" tab, on the top of the emulator, and increase the "Speed" in the bottom left-hand corner to a higher number. What emulator are you using?
MFME2, 3.2 or 9.4?

MFMEv3 ?
but there is no configuration tab

I tried in in MFME v2 but it was too big for my screen and couldnt see the start/hold buttons. (even though my screen res is 1280). However the tabs at the top were different from v3

Right. Click on "File", then "Preferences". You should see a box marked "Auto Throttle". Tick the box, and you should be fine.

Just remember that if you're going to play the newer S4, or MPU5 games, you'll need to play them on MFME9.4 or 10.1. These emulators don't have the "rescale" function, so look for layouts that will fit into your maximum resolution.

9.4, and 10.1 are in the downloads here. So when you feel adventurous, grab them from this link: Fruit-Emu (Fruit Machine Emulation) - Download: - Emulators
