Tell you what started this off. A friend of mine at work asked where the word "crap" came from. On investigation it seems the best bet is that a man called Thomas Crapper, a plumber in the 19th Century patented a lot of products to do with plumbing and water facilities. Whilst, it seems, he didn't actually invent the bog (his name isn't patented, although he was the boss of the man who did patent it)...but it could have been him. Hence the term "I'm just going to the Crapper"....and therefore the word now means to designate something that is shite.
