I seen a Golden Game machine today with the "topbox" either switched off or screwed...even though the bottom units were still on.
Just wondering what would happen if you got a GG on the bottom reels..would the bottom reels spin to a combination of wins..or would it just alarm or summat ?

I might be wrong but if the top unit is inactive then the main unit's game is enhanced to compensate. Someone told me that once - might have been a technician in an arcade, I can't quite remember lol

In mfme the machine stays in a 'busy' state as its waiting for communication from the top box. It never times out so can only be cleared by resetting.

I played a 3 machine 10p £5JP game in Hornsea about a year ago. This game was like SuperSTREAK but had red and blue stars to start the top box feature. I think it also had cherries, red 7's, blue 7's, bells and melons as reel symbols (3 x red 7's was jp). I stuck £3 into it and the arcade assistant came across and told me that the top game was broken but the machine would play this game on the normal reels. I was a little sceptic so thought I'd play my games off fast and move on. Before I blew my credits, I managed a mixed streak that went for £4 on the main reels.
I'm not sure if theres any differences in gameplay if the top boxes don't work and the feature is played on the normal reels, but I ended up recycling the winnings and playing for a good 30 mins or so and managed a few red streaks and blue streaks. I'm sure one red streak paid over the £25 which I always thought was the maximum/cut-off point.
In the end, it was the highest amount I've won on a 10p £5jp type game. I think my £3 netted me over £40 in the end.
It was a weird day as the £3 in my pocket, plus a few 10p's was all I had and decided I wasn't going to use one of those cash machines that charge £1.50 to draw out your own cash so the £3 was all I was gonna play.

Sounds like Red,White and Blue Zoltar,a good game on 25p/£15 but spoilt it when JP went up to £25.On £15 jp you could get the machine happy until it offered red streaks continuously and could go for £75-£75-£75 after holding the red stars twice after streaks.Tried same theory on 10p£5 version but can be a real twat of a machine.
With no communication with top box think max was about £25 red streak on 10p play but obviously by spinning the streak on the reels, you lose the chance of the stars holding for one or two more streaks.
A right bummer if you ploughed loads of cash through it

If the game said 'BUSY', would harsh language have given me a chance of winning?

I do hope that wasn't aimed at me. I'm quite miserable, dejected and vulnerable tonight. Only the slightest push and I will fall back into a world of alcohol abuse and mucky books.
