Hi all,

I have been talking to a friend, and we're dissagreeing on an arguement, my friend believes that if a new emu is coded that the author should charge people for it? but I'm mixed on the issue, as the way I see it, the layouts are released for free, and the general point of these sites are not to make a profit, but i do agree that if someone has put the amount of time it takes into getting an emu coded properly, then thier work should be rewarded, (by the way, I am not talking about guitars project, so dont start insinuating he's going to charge for it!!! or flaming him because of my post, this is just a general question that shouldn't be taken too seriously!!!!) any way, I thought i'd put the question to the scene, and see how other members felt about this topic?

MadS,

I have always been totally against charging for emulation/ simulation or dx's within the scene... However due to the ongoing nature of an emulator I have always understood the time and effort that goes in to be far in excess of DX's and simulations - What I have always thought would be an acceptable method of maintaining costs involved with project and a proper way of allowing people to say thank you was to have an optional payment address for those who like the work to decide to contribute or not - or even make it postcardware (ie where if you like it you just send a postcard to the author as thanks).. Charging generally would never work in my opinion though as it would be impossible to control and also would be against what the scene has always stood for (although not at the very start - lol)...

A simple NO.

Yes the Emulator is of course the backbone of FME and I agree a hell of a lot of time is put in to creating it.

Then this is the same with Emulations themselves...they take time too......I think across the board it should remain as 'our hobby'.

Of course the only difference with the above is that at times a good resource machine comes to light, when that happens several Members offer to chip-in a few bob....in my eyes thats the ONLY time cash should change hands--purely as cash has been spent out for the scene.

Quite a lot of this goes on behind the scenes so to speak, and probably has done for years. So considering the fact that members buy, chip in for machines / resources I'd say no.

Guitar is putting a lot of work into his and is obviously someone who loves what he does / the scene, otherwise he wouldn't do it, simple. Lets hope that Guitar after this can go from strength to strength and create a few more in the future. Also hope there are more versions of MFME in the future (looks unlikely) but I hope CW (doesn't punish us all :)), cause most of us disagree with the leaked versions of MFME.

in all onesty FME would go right down the pan if the emulator were to be charged for because there wouldnt be as many people in the scene and making the emulations

as ady says it should remain a hobby and if money was involved it could cause some arguments and putting preassure on the coders and layout designers so its a deffinate no for me

Its a fair point Shaun has though..as Cardie and Ady says though..yes its a hobby..and the time and effort that is put into coding these emulators is always appreciated by the members of the FME scene.

But i put it like this..if someone was secretly working on an Epoch emulator..got it up and running 100% working..and released it with the Emulator and say..20 Epoch DX layouts but wanted a fiver for it.

Most of us would tell him/her to shove it where the sun dont shine..but i bet there would be hundreds willing to pay for it.
Mmmmmm...Sandy ive 'ad her ye know. :)

I voted for : This is a stupid question, and the thread starter should be shot!!!!

even better if he / she was on here .. BAN lol

As for everything on here its free and always be free

But the donating to the site is always welcome to keep these emulators and layouts alive

Mind you ... i have seen these emulators in Liverpool stanley market

Mostly DADS and Pooks Releases are sold on the disk ..

Used to sell them as 50 layouts now been upgraded to 100 for £5 .. I told the feller .. i know these people who create these layouts very well .. and these are FREE on a website and if i see my layouts on the disk i will sue ya cos the layouts designers took ages and free time creating these super smashing great layouts for free....

Even when people buy computer equipment off him then he ask wanna buy a fruit machine pack ... every time

also i hold back a lot told them not to buy and gave them the site instead

thats why fruit emu is popular today

thanks to me and my pen & paper lol

Originally Mfme was only available to buy with a certain amount of roms on CD, if i remember correctly and the Author decided to do a public release to prevent any Lawful action from Fruit machine Manufacturers who had got wind of it. (dont quote me as i vaguely remember a thread somewhere about it). I think charging people for something that utilises copyrighted material is a no-no in corporate worlds...

I'd certainly pay for an emulator if it was the motivation needed by a potential author to release an emulator. We have insulted and argued with the author of MFME and ignored his wishes on numerous occasions. Yet he gave his emulator to us free of charge.

God help him if he charged for an emulator as everyone would presume they have a right to make a complaint seeing as they have paid. But that is exactly what will happen if one was released and it was a chargable affair.

Of course, it still doesn't condemn any author into having to reply and accept what is said. But if money was indeed the right motivation, then I see no wrong in having to pay if thats the only way to get the scene moving forward once again.

Maybe 3 days of praise, then 3 years of moans and groans from an ungrateful public is enough for someone to 'chuck' in the towel. Why continue to make 'free' emulators with this same tried and tested result happening on each occasion.

The problem with charging, just like ALL software, is that it'll be release free within a day as someone will hack it, so basically, it's not worth it.

Also, I'm sure one of the reasons we're alllowed to do what we do without too much trouble from the board is due to the fact that we DONT charge.

I'd be happy to pay if it was for something I wanted, but then it'd become like those Elvis, Rainbow Riches etc emulators, where it is realsed for a SINGLE program not multiple uses.
