Hi Ian have you re-installed all the motherboard drivers as well because the one for the Ethernet card might need installing.

Obvious question time :)

Assuming it's a router, is it both plugged into the mains, and connected to the PC with the same network cable that was used before?

Does the modem / router have any status lights on the front lit?

You did remember to plug the modem / router into the phone socket, (with a microfilter ideally!) didn't you?

:)

Motherboard drivers would have the USB controllers etc, so hopefully you reinstalled them.

Formar BT Yahoo front line techie here... Guessing you are dealing with a BT Home Hub

These hubs are re-badged netgear / speedtouch (Tompson) units, and work the same way as a cable baised (NTL, etc) router, with exception they have an ADSL modem built in.

Right first of all use Ethernet insed of USB for the simple fact it needs less to set up etc and requires no additional drivers installed.

If you have this, then look at the attachment and follow the pic's in order, after opening control pannel > internet options > connections > setup

If you can not get it set up after this, check the following page for set up help:

Also when you have set up your connection using the Network Wizzard check your NETWORK CONNECTIONS (CONTROL PANEL / NETWORK CONNECTIONS )

If there is an icon of a PADLOCK on the connection then you will be unable to conect to the internet - to get rid of this right click on the icon and select PROPERTIES -- Then select the tab ADVANCED, under WINDOWS FIREWALL select SETTINGS and switch OFF Windows Firewall .. Click OK.

You will now notice that the padlock has vanished and you will now be able to access the internet.

Hi

From previous posts the conncetion is ok as you are can use the interent on your laptop so you have an outward connection via the hub, If you have set up for ethernet use do the following and paste the results here for more help

go to run then type cmd and press ok

In the commnad window that opens type ipconfig /all you will get some information on in command window copy this and then paste here if you can do the same on your laptop so we have a comapason with a working conneciton and a non working one.

But it is advisable to make an exception for your browsers and other Internet applications rather than switch off the entire firewall.
