2. Its illegal if you dont have a licence .. but who gives a f*** aslong as its not open to the general public.. and it wud b legal if all the machines are set to £5 jackpot

if the gaming board find out your operating machines for public use then they will be down on you like a ton of bricks, so be warned!!
just to add, if your caught not only will you have the gaming board down your neck but also the inland revenue and failing to pay duty or taxes and will also see all your machines been seized by HM customs.

Yep the Lincsmaster is right if you get caught you would be in big trouble
My mate did the same thing in his spare room someone grassed on him ( the one that had lost his money no doubt )
2 Police men turned up and a gaming board offical and customs and they did take the machines away on a truck!!
It dont matter what JP's or stakes is you still not the permits etc
So dont get caught or brag about it if i were you !!

i know an arcadian in bridlington who had a 3 player partytime in his arcade and didn't have a license to operate that machine. not only did they seize the machine and left the top box with the owner but they also seized all the cash within machine's 1,2 and 3. and to this day he still hasn't got the 3 machines back, so the only memory he has been left with is the top box to which they didn't take

i cant see any operator/distributor selling that machine which costs soewhere in the 1.5-2k mark, for £120. bulbs working or not.
stu, get yourself a gaming license (which your not going to get)
get planning to change your greenhouse into a AGC (which you wont get)
get premis licnese (which wont be granted)
pay AMLD, who will gladly take you for thousands
then take a few hundred off your mates and lose thousands per year out of the balance. OR dont pay anyone and goto prison, get customs to conviscate the machines and also get your parents in the local paper for extorting money out of children too.
nice.

if the machine is dodgy be assured it can be traced back to the original purchaser, every machine has a serial number, which is logged at B.A.C.T.A's head office

I'm going to be honest. I wouldn't bother opening an arcade in the near future unless you are 100% sure about what you are doing. £10000 being enough? You do realise how much licenses e.t.c. cost? If not I'd look that up for starters

Seriously Stu. I myself looked into opening an arcade once. Unless you have £150,000 lying around forget it. You could end up paying 6 months (possibly more) rent on a premises waiting for your application for the correct permits etc to be approved. And if they get turned down you then have to rent an empty building for full cost for the length of the appeal process. Then even if you get lucky and your premises get approved, you have to pay a high liscence fee for every machine above a £5 JP. You need to get machine permits too. If you opt for £5 machines only then you wont get any serious players in your arcade. And it will be full of school kids and chavs.
Then you have to build a customer base (not so important for seaside arcades admittedly), and compete with other arcade owners, including some fairly dodgy ones, so make sure you have full insurance (which once you have claimed on once, the premium will go through the roof). Then you have to bow to Bacta's demands and new rules and regulations. And then theres all the lagalities involved in running a business. Third party insurance cover in case a customer or employee falls over a loose tile and sues you etc. You have to hire staff which means you have to comply with health and safety regs which get stricter all the time. Then there is the cost of rent, rates, electricity (which is fairly high on these machines), water etc.
Then you have to fill the machines with a float, not forgetting buying or renting the machines in the first place. Then everytime you buy a machine which has an emptier for it, someone could be taking your money, which in turn can mean that some poor player loses a hell of a lot of money in your arcade and stops playing there, fine if its a tourist, not if they are a regular customer though, word of mouth can kill a business as well as make it.
PLus the other bits you need to buy for an arcade, the front sign of the arcade (if covered in neon lights as per most seaside amusements will cost a bomb), bins, signs, wall decoration, change machines, heavy duty carpet, a sack barrow, tea and coffee making facilities (even if only for staff).
I could go on but I am bored now. But the general gist is, £10,00 will buy you 2 new machines and a member of staff, ish.

I have got so say I totally disagree with you on this Guitar. I know of one arcade a guy I know set up for under £20k (admittedly most of them were second habd machines), and I also saw an arcade for sale on ebay not long back with machines and license for next 12 months at £12k. Depends how you want to do it I would suggest, and certainly for a startup would be able to do it for below £20k if you had to.

I would suggest the owner of said arcade was in trouble with some rather nasty people and wanted rid quickly. Or it was 4 foot square with 5 machines.
I'd like to hear more opinions though.

I think I quoted it off ebay at the time. I'll try and sort it out..He had 24 machines in there (20 of them being £5 jackpot).. It was around Leicester if I remember correctly. It looked an absolute dive, had neon lights but metal grates over the windows.. Let me have a look for the post and get back to you.

Sounds like Lisa's Amusements!
I think the Ebay auction was for an arcade based in Nottingham. I seem to remember a few posts about it at the time.

Sorry Nudgeman - you are bang on - I couldn't remember whether it was Leicester or Nottingham so I plumped for Leicester
That's definitely the one though, I remember it was Nottingham now as I actually looked at it seriously for about 5 minutes - lol.. It's turnover was pretty laughable really.
