My 'Star Wars Dark Side' has suddenly stopped booting up correctly and I cannot figure it out.

All the voltage rails are okay, the lights are all lit on the MPU6 and I have checked them with a meter;

24v, 13v, 5v, -12v, 3.3v, 1.5v

The display on the MPU6 alternates between;

MPU6 BOOT v3.7  and BCOS8.56 FPGA 8

There is a loud click from the speaker and then the messages rotate again.

Can anyone offer any advise on what could be the problem or things to try please?

Sounds similar to an issue Scorp4's often suffer with (Because some of the PSU's used are so shite)..... if it is indeed the same type of fault as on s4's, the +5v sense line from the PSU is probably not 100%, so the PSU would require repair / replacement.

In S4's, this typically causes a looped reboot issue, very similar to what you describe for your MPU6 machine, and in fact, quite a lot of machines will do this looped reboot thing or just completely lock up, if it's +5v sense line is not right on the PSU.

If you can at all possible, borrow a known working compatible PSU, and see if it boots up OK.

Cheers, buddy. I've not got another PSU but will pull this one out and test it more thoroughly.

Is the 5v sense internal to the PSU do you know, or does it get send back from one of the circuits in the unit?

Unfortunately I have never worked on MPU6, and don't know a great deal about MPU5 either (I generally dislike machines on the Barcrest platform anyway), but there are general basics on all modern machines which you would generally follow.

If you have one or can find one, getting an MPU6 general tech guide, should show you some technical drawings (Certainly the case on MPU4 and 5), and with that, should be able to show you where this +5v sense line is on the PSU.

In all fairness, from what you have described and how you have kept the machine, my money will be on something with the PSU, and as you appear to have some general electronics knowledge, feel you should be up to the task to sort this yourself..... so first test would be run the PSU under zero load (Should be a power connector that runs from the PSU to the rest of the machine, so disconnect that), and meter output.

Hello again,

I got myself another tested working same model PSU from eBay (Barcrest model 12509) and unfortunately the machine is doing exactly the same.. :-(

The MPU wil not bot, just cycles every 2 or 3 seconds, the speaker clicks and restarts again,

Any other suggestions appreciated.

Possible that your battery is low in mpu6 so it won't boot up

Yeah maybe its the fist time it's been switched on in a few moonths. Is it rechargeable or a lithium replaceable battery?

Tried RAM clearing the MPU6?

How do i do that?

Replaced battery - now it boots, asked for date/time as battery been out.

 Still will not complete it's boot though as the following errors are displayed;

Coin Mech Error 10

Serial Bus Error 89

It was fine last time I used it, could these be something to do with settings being lost due to battery replacement?

I seam to remember there is a reset procedure you need to follow after a RAM reset / Battery change, but for the life of me, I can not remember what this procedure is..... I'll see if I can locate an MPU6 tech guide from somewhere and see if it mentions how this is done.

Also get a feeling one of the mods (Spa) has come across this issue once before (Think it was on a pacman game?)

Managed to find a field guide..... even if this don't help now, worth downloading for future reference.

Right, managed to contact Spa, and appears you are best looking at this following thread, which although deals with a corrupted RAM, shows how to reset an MPU6, and with that, should sort your problem.

From what I can see, a "watchdog" protection chip has kicked in, so needs to be reset.

Thanks for the suggestions, I've come back to this after a few days and am still stuck...

It does look as though the serial / device association with the MPU has been lost when the battery was replaced and RAM reset.

I don't know however the procedure to re attach the coin mech.  I have tried one instruction to reset the coin mech (adjust the dial control, press button for 5 secs, etc.) but did not make any difference.

Does anyone have experience of reattaching an SR5 coin mech to MPU6?

I am sure it's a simple thing once I know the correct steps. I could not find this info in the MPU6 field guide.

Many thanks.
