I've ended up with 4 old one pound coins which I didn't manage to spend before the end date.

I plan to put them in a British Legion Poppy Appeal box as soon as I see one. Perhaps you could do something similar.

because tbh it costs us a fortune
we spent out on note acceptos

we spent out on doing mechs for both coins

They will phase out quickly we only refill news and as you found theres only a few left in the hoppers on any machine that's played alot

It costs you a fortune to dump the hoppers?

As for your other 2 points, that's part and parcel of any business which involves machines that accept money.and in no way warrants ANY business giving out coins which are no longer legal tender.

As businesses are no longer required to accept the old coins, likewise neither is Joe Public.

To not have an arcades machines old coin free by now, is nothing short of idleness imho!

It depends on the profit margins involved.

If you've got to pay out on having all coin mechs changed then that's quite a hit unless it's part of your service contract. Then there's been the introduction of the new fivers and tenners. I'm not saying it shouldn't be done but there should also be some sort of consideration from government about the costs involved for cash operations like arcades, vending machine businesses, etc. when talking about these sort of changes.

In terms of the costs of the hoppers, you've got the security element too - average £400 per machine to be swapped out and the time involved; you're not going to get many staff doing overtime to do it unless they need the money so you're doing it yourself after hours. Again, a security risk.

Surely if you won the old pound coins in an arcade they would have to exchange them as they aren't legal tender.

In my experience most arcade staff wouldn't even change an old (obviously fake) quid when it had come out of one of their machines and wouldn't got back in it, so why would they now suddenly happily swap something which is no longer legal tender?

The last time we were in Wales (I knew at the time I should have taken a photo, but had left my phone in the caravan) the 2 site arcades had signs on the change machines saying that they would NOT change old for new as from the 16th they were no longer legal tender. These are arcades which between the two of them only had TWO machines in the family parts which took old coins and THREE in the over 18's sections.

How can this be legal?  They will let you get paid out in old coins, but not let you re-spend them (save for the 4 machines mentioned) and to top it off, the change machines were giving out OLD coins!

In case you are wondering which arcades these were, they belong to Lyons Winkups and even though the owners are Gypsies so the Law obviously doesn't apply to them ;) I still don't see how they could get away with it.

One old woman had a 400 odd pound win and ended up with only THIRTY FOUR new coins, this was on a Sunday afternoon and when she asked for them changing she was told to bank them the next day.  This meant she had to carry them back to wherever she was staying and then carry them to the bank.  They aren't light and she was in her eighties and on her own!  Even the coin to note machine would no longer accept the old ones.  In the end Steve carried them back to her van for her.

Profit margins and the costs of changing everything over to new coinage really shouldn't come into it.  They are the downside of having a business which has so many machines and the Government comment is is just silly as we all know the Government don't give a flying f**k about such things.  If it doesn't line their own pockets, then it's of no interest to them..... this applies to ALL Parties, not just the one in power now!

Changing coin mechs and the costs of dealing with cash are also tax deductible business expenses for any legitimate operation.

Most banks will.

Some banks stop taking them tomorrow.

Which is quite a sad situation considering many companies have had to apply vast changes in such a short space of time.

I agree with most of your points.

Yet I also sympathize with not just arcade owners but everyone involved across a wide industry in changing products to accommodate the new coins.

There has been 3 roll outs of the coin all with a slight variation.

And I can only imagine the many problems people have had across many industries, adapting and making significant changes only to find the coin changes yet again.

Close to where I live several arcades changed the mechs and slots well before the final deadline date was approaching.

But true enough there are many arcades out there with 100's of old pound coins in there slots, pushers and video gaming machines.

Every arcade I have come across with the old pound coin in my winnings have happily changed them back-or ive just put them back in.

The experience you had on the camp site mind is shameful, especially for the elderly lady with all the coins.

But again having also experienced arcades on camp sites/holiday sites-they are in the majority of cases so poorly maintained and ran.

And the majority of staff they leave on duty no nothing of the slots, don't have keys (to sort the slots out when there are problems),and quite often leave a slot off rather than getting someone to fix it. :nah:

On another note-

My mate's friend took his family to a holiday park outside of Southport recently.

The arcade there was huge with many high tech games, slots etc.

He entered the arcade most mornings at around 9.30am and he witnessed (on 3 out of the 5 mornings he was there)that the arcade had not a single attendant!!

How bad is that!-And the amount of money in those slots and games too. :err:

He said there had to be 200 slots, pushers and ticket game machines and all left un-manned.

He spoke with the site manager over the situation, and his response was " You will have to take this up with the entertainment manager" :biglaugh:  :biglaugh:

He said to him if this was in my local town -Blackpool and they left an arcade unattended, there wouldn't be a single machine left in the premises let alone cash in the machines!!

It real beggers believe-How stupid and irresponsible some sites are.

I went to the seaside at the weekend. Every single arcade was still taking and paying old quids! I pulled it up in the Cashino, yes, a Cashino! Was told to put it in the change machine and it will swap it for a new one, which it did.

I guess alot of these places will keep the old quid on the mechs. They will slowly but surely phase out.

Another place I won £4... lol, paid out 2 or each, put the two old ones back in and collected 1 old and 1 new, the old back in, another old. Went again, another old. Ah well. The pound coin roulette was not in my favour.

JEM (Mellors) in Derby / Nottingham, are still using old coins, with my local one in Long Eaton, sill swimming in old coins, though the staff will change em when you cash up..... Fortunately my bank (NatWest) is just up the road and still takes in old coins.
