Hi guys and gals...

Ive just formatted my HP laptop with the recovery to Factory Default with the HP Recovery System.

The trouble is that it had Windows 10 on it and now it has gone back to Windows 8.1 (original Factory Windows OS).

How do I get the Windows 10 operating system back on it, because I never took the serial key with it as it was the free Upgrade that Windows 10 did awhile back.

Hope any of you can help...

Daryl x

That is likely to be long lost then.

That program of free upgrades I think ended a while ago.

Welcome to Windows 8.1.

Classic shell will fix the menus ( I use and love it ), but what about the safe mode issue ?

If you created a Microsoft account, then the 8.1 key should be good to still upgrade to Win 10...

Thank you so much for the link, you’ve saved me bacon!

This time I will make sure I run the command prompt to bring up my Windows Serial Key and make a note of it for future use, should I have to back up or restore the HP laptop again.

Thanks all, very much appreciated... Windows 10 is running fine back on it again :)

There is an alternative here - ( my issue is that windows 10 doesn't recognize the drivers for the asus pci-e m.2 card and thus windows 10 wont install)

Once you have windows 10 fully installed with barebones or full reinstall of all you programs, use a program like acronis true image to make a full image of your setup. Actually i fully endorse the acronis package, it will even give a F11 prompt before windows loads so you can go direct into the  backup before windows loads.

even better, it will create a hidden partition that you can access in the event of faliure.

if you have trouble sourcing acronis, just ask ;)

Hi

If you are installing on the same PC you upgraded from once you reinstall. if you have not got a disk you can make one from any machine that has windows 10 installed on it if you don't have access to one yourself, then any one you know close to hand can make you one of these and burn to a DVD, you can use this to install and it should activate over the internet ok as your key should be stored by MS.

Regards

I upgraded a laptop today from genuine Win7 to Win10 activated.

Isn't the licence validation done by hardware/online validation now opposed to keys specifically? I've lumped Windows 8/10 back onto various devices and none of them have needed keys after a few days when they've connected to the net & done updates etc.

I didn't realise that Windows 10 recognised the device automatically...

I just did a full recovery and obviously my HP Recovery reinstalled Windows 8.1 as Factory default.

I didn't want to put Windows 10 on as a new install, just in case it needed a serial key which I hadn't made a note of and it asked for it, but now I know that Microsoft stores the device's details, I will TRY & REMEMBER next time! ;)

I also found this on the computer... Which would have answered my original question and made me realise that I could have 'digitally' updated back to Windows 10...

I had a bit of a headache with a desktop machine.  Upgraded to Win8. Then 8.1. Ultimately Win 10.  I also signed up for insider preview, it f***ed up now every time it does an update I get Activate windows watermark, trying to re-activate just errors.  Bloody pain.
