Back in the dawn of time when Mfme.Exe was known as Fruit.Exe there was a lot of great layouts that max'd out our PC's - sadly times changed and screens changed, so what we have now is basically a small postage stamp sized layout built using tools and methods of many years ago.

We should always be pleased with what we get and expect nothing, but you do wonder is it time to start to revisit the past and redoing some of the great classic machines in todays format ?

All too often we have the latest and greatest S4's, S5's and MPU5's... ...what about some of the legacy stuff that may welcome a revisit in terms of getting the flyer again and doing it once more.

If I was to do a list of machines that I think would be awesome to have in brand new shiney DX format for todays standards, it would include:

- Eastenders

- Eastenders - Albert Square

- Mad House

- Super Blackjack Club

- Viva Las Vegas

- Casino Crazy Club

This does not mean there is anything wrong with what we've got - but there is no rule that layouts of the past cannot be redone.  When you look at MFME the features that it now offers such as rescaling allow designers to work with a much better sized canvas so don't feel this is a critical email of what we had done in the past - this is a suggestion that when designers are looking for work to do - consider looking to the past and seeing what might welcome a full screen and all singing and dancing version.

Eastenders, has a very good looking M1adness DX for it. Eastenders - The Queen Vic, would replace it in the above list for me.

As for the others, Viva Las Vegas and Club Casino Crazy, not amongst the most desperate for an update.

But I do agree, would absolutely love to see some of the older DX's getting a modern makeover, but I wonder if the sources are still available to do that.

Unless you've got the original 10Mb ish bmp file, then you're working with a scaled down to 1024 jpeg.

Hi wac, hope all's well, long time no see!

With respect to the releases above, not a fan of the really dark stuff. Loved Dave to bits but fell he went too dark with his layouts; was he in Fritzl's arcade when he was playing them? Viva looks absolutely fine but the other two are a bit too dark for my liking. As I said, fair play to him for getting through so many layouts.

As I also said on a different thread, is there a standard height for layouts these days? Assuming width is variable due to monitor shapes varying, height tends to be 1080 - do we set a suggested height of, say, 1000?

I may plan to re visit mini layouts, the flyers are still out there, they just need redoing for mfme6
I'd love to redo dads topstop for V6 as it holds special memories. The list is endless to many mpu4 and impacts that could be redone
As most know my layouts used to be around 700x 1000 max due to lappy size, now the largeness is unlimited but tend to keep at around the 15/1600W x 1200H area

Hi Mark, yeah I'm good, enjoying the FME revival, hope you're good.

I think M1adness layouts that haven't aged that bad at all. Look at Wild Zone, coming up to 11 years old and still a cracking looking layout.

Good thanks - bit dark but doesn't look dated I'll agree.

Right, I've got my first three emulations in mind; all slightly different, all with different resources at hand. Once I've seen the results, I'll see which way I prefer working.

1000 deep is just too small now, especially as mfme cab scale layouts to your screen size.

Ideally for a DX I'd say 1440 is bare minimum. I create all of my layouts in 1440, but prefer to create 4k. It's all about resource quality.

My screen resolution is 2560 x 1080, so are you saying that the artwork should be bigger but the emulator will reduce it?

Yes. I work on initial resources a lot bigger than 4k, but once I'm done I reduce it to 2160 deep then make the layout on mfme with my 2160 pixel on and off images.

Now mfme even supports overlapping lamps so you can create bespoke masks or use the inbuilt mask creator, it's pretty nifty. Again it all depends on orignal quality of source art.

I would love to get pics of Barcrest Las Vegas Six. One of my favourites of that type of game.

Problem is if it's made tooooo big then the zip.file it too big also take a look at barcrest space invaders I think andy-1 made it, agian upto the creator who makes it, but in my eyes it's far to big and when rescaled it still runs too slow on lappy. I'd still say what ever the original Size was for the old 1600wdxs is plenty big enough maybe a tad bigger but not much more!
As said each to their own mine are plenty big enough for my needs
What you lining up to do memap?

I don't see any point in creating less that 2160 deep now mfme supports it personally. You going to be recreating it again in the future when 4k becomes the norm. Bit of a waste of time if the resources are good enough to start with.

I agree though, there are no rules, it's not a job, people can create a layout to whatever size they want.

J
Getting hi quality resources is the biggest problem. Not for newer techs but certainly stuff from early 90's

I would love to see some of these old timers revamped (if possible due to resources)specially now with stretch screen and with cabs becoming like the way forward,Yes its nice to have new tech introduced so we can have more new machines but there just not the same,as most of them old timers are Classics look at the system 1s,Scorpion 1,2,MPU3,4 to name but a few theirs load of bangers in that lot (best years of fruit machining ever) all give good game play, plus memories of when you was young going the arcade on a Saturday with your mates.

I think a few layout creators overtime will update their work if its needed with possible resources, new mfme and new photoshop etc which back in the day was good but now better.

The only problem i see is some of the layout creators who have left and made there mark in mfme history, there layouts will get left behind.

I made a shit version of this also but it was one of my first lol.
But again I could venture back to it one day. Would need a very hi res flyer though??
Also action note I have loads of images to make a better version than this one.

Ah, so essentially like the MAME cabinets.

Sounds like an impossible dream, given the number of machines with extra buttons all over the show.

So the main thing is to do a cabinet shaped DX rather than anything with side art like we used to?
