Maygay donkey kong with 2.1 reel error

Hi,

I have a Maygay Donkey Kong fruit machine circa 1996. It was working ok although didn't boot up everytime i turned it on but now when it boots up reals 2 and 3 move but reel 1 does not and i get a loud alarm noise and the message 2.1 reel error. All three reels seem to spin freely by hand and i can't see any obvious defects.

has anyone got any ideas of how i can fix it.

it could be a faulty reel motor or opto senser or a faulty M1A main board

If you can get inside the machine check that the cables attached to the reels are all plugged in properly if they are and you still get the same problem check all the other cables on the motherboard it could be somthing as silly as a cable being slightly out of place

A couple of members on here work for the amusement industry.

Bazpeeb or Advance Lesuire may be able to do you a deal if they have them spare parts lying about.

Hang fire and im sure one of them will reply soon enough.

Check the battery on the main-board. Working normally, followed by random non-booting, followed by a reel error says leaking battery to me. Try swapping the cables on the reels to see if the fault stays on a specific reel or whether the fault moves. If the fault moves then I would imagine that the battery has started leaking. If you do discover a leaking battery remove it asap. If there is a patch of leaked fluid (usually the case) you can begin cleaning it with a little vinegar on an old toothbrush. Whilst its called battery acid, its actually an alkali and the vinegar will neutralise its effects. Once you have done that wash the brush thoroughly and then clean the effected area of the board with some soapy water and dry thoroughly. Possibly leave it overnight in a warm, dry place to ensure all the water has evaporated.

If the board is badly damaged you may need to do some soldering, and also do not do any of the above with the mainboard plugged in, and especially not turned on.

Also, when you remove the battery, whenever you plug the board in it will display something like 4.2 RAM ERROR on boot up. This is normal, wait a few seconds and the error will clear and boot-up will continue.

An opto-sensor is what tells the machine what position the reels are in.

Its essentially a photocell with an LED pointed at it. The reel has a plastic tab on it somewhere. When in a certain position, the plastic tab will intersect between the LED and photocell preventing the light reaching the photocell. This raises the resistance of the photocell which is measured electronically and sends a signal to the machine to say that the reel is in its specific point. The reel then steps on x steps from that specific position and this is how the machine knows where the reels are and also when to stop them.

The battery is situated right above the reel index (opto control port) controls, when it leaks, its one of the first things it touches (also stepper motor controls and battery recharge circuit). Do you have an M1A or M1B motherboard? M1A is green in colour, M1B is red, M1C (highly unlikely but you never know) is black / very dark blue in colour.

Edit: If you turn on the machine with the back door open and wait for it to turn on etc. Then if you carefully step the reel round by hand you should see an LED light up near the opto when the reel is in a set position. If the LED doesn't come on then it may be that the opto is faulty. I think (but I could be wrong) that the LED is on when the red 7's are on the winline.
